I'm sad to report Bob, that woodencanoeitus is totally incurable and eventually terminal.

Pretty soon all available space will be filled with all sorts of paddlecraft in all states of repair, disrepair.

The only potential relief for the disease is frequent paddling of said craft in remote regions.

Otherwise, it's hopeless to resist.

Bob you know you got it bad when you lay awake at night thinking of the next improvment or next 10 construction steps on your boat or boats. You're not there yet are you? ;)

Ohhhhh, does not look good for him. He's in his retirement now and suffering with the affliction miserably. He nearly bought 6 relic old towns at an auction recently....... tongue.gif

We hope to paddle together some over the weekend to ease the symptoms.

:D

Woodencanoeitis is but a mosquito bite of an affliction. Regrettably though it does predispose you to an even more sinister strain called Nextonious Floatum Boatonsis that has no cure.

That is the bad news. Curiously the host continues through life blissfully unaware of his/her condition. Unfortunately, said condition is pointed out on a regular basis by the host's loved (?) ones. Studies have confirmed that this tendency appears irresistible to those in the presence of the host and yet the host seems to suffer no adverse long term effects from what are the unrelenting observations of others.

Prescriptions seem to be consistent world wide in recommending the maintenence of the peaceful, at-one-with-the-world aura that all victims share. In this way the host can anticipate a normal lifespan.

That struck a nerve; been there, only I found myself dreaming about building (a kayak), and even troubleshooting potential problems. I finally "broke down" (swmbo is watching) and built a 17LT, and must report I feel much better now; however, lately the dreams have returned. Something about building a sailboat....

and then you get to where I am right now....

considering taking the deck off of one of my Ches. 17's and lowering the shear and putting on a strip deck with a completely different profile than it started with. That boat has way too much volume. Then you look at the strongback for the next kayak you built and think about what would happen if you changed the stations from 12" to 8" everywhere but the cockpit and changed the rudder set up and and and and....

i feel sorry for anyone who doesn't have the affliction. it is blissful isn't it? spent the last 4 hours puttering around the shop and boats and i'm very relaxed right now. got the "heidi' sail and rigging done today, she's ready for her first sail. next the thompson restoration then the b.n.morris then i can build again. :D
i'm sure my case is terminal.

With all Due Respect to cheech and Chong:

:D Boatbuilding Jones Featuring Oyster :D

Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones
Got a Boatbuilding Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-ooo

Yes, I am the victim of a Boatbuilding Jones
Ever since I was a little baby, I always be lofting
In fac', I was de baddest lofter in the whole neighborhood
Then one day, my mama bought me Chappell’s Boatbuilding
And I loved that book
I took that book with me everywhere I went
That book was like a book to me

I even put that book underneath my pillow
Maybe that's why I can't sleep at night
I need help, ladies and gentlemens
I need someone to stand beside me
I need, I need someone to set a fair line for me at the water line of life
Someone I can spile with
Someone to hit the station mark on the give-and-go
And not end up in the CPES
So cheerleaders, help me out

{cheerleaders sing repeatedly...}
(Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones)
(I got a Boatbuilding Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-ooo)

{while Oyster Hitches up his coveralls sings/speaks...}
Oh, that sounds so sweet
Sing it out
C'mon Coach Stan, Memphis Mike, Dingo sing along with me
That be bad, honky
Yeah
I want everybody in the whole Forum to stand up and sing with us
Oh yeah, sing it out like you're proud
All right, everybody watchin' coast-to-coast, sing along with us
MeerKAt, sing along with us
Lefty, sing along with us, Lisa S sing along with us
DONN, don't sing nothin'

Oh, it feels so good
Gimme the Hammer
I'll go one-on-one against the world, left-handed
I could varnish with my toes
I could jump on top of the doghouse, take off a quarter, leave fifteen cents change I
could, I could reef behind my back I got more moves than Ex-Lax I'm bad I could
Fasten with my tongue Here I go down the sheerstrake, try to stop me You can't stop me 'cause I
got a Boatbuilding Jones Here I come That's my haulout with my eyebrow Yeah, I could
carve a rudder with my nose I'm, I'm bad as King Kong, gimme the caulking iron I'm hot, I'm hot as...,
I'm hot as..., I'm hot as... uh Uh, uh, uh, uh
Everybody sing it
(Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones, Boatbuilding Jones)
(Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones, Boatbuilding Jones)
(Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones, Boatbuilding Jones)
(Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones, I got a Boatbuilding Jones, Boatbuilding Jones)

LisaS; you got it bad, kid. Just curious - how you going to take the plywood deck off = saw through the shear? BTW, nice sale going on today at that company...

LisaS

George - I've been pondering this idea for a while. I think my approach will be to mark where I want my new shear, then saw across where the two bulkheads are, then down the length. After that, I'll mark the positions for temporary building forms, measure for those and hot glue them in, then start stripping the deck.

Sounds like fun, but difficult. By any chance have you checked out that kayak website (like in the past two days)? Might just be time to do a S&G/stripper deck combo, from scratch! And as some wise (guy) on here said, you can never have too many boats...

Sad but rue about woodencanoeitis. So far, 1 Macgreggor, 2 sailfish (yes 2), 1 6hr canoe unassembled, 1 freelanced dinghy unassembled, 1 half built sea kayak, planning for Outreds ELF.
SIGH, is there a cure?? :D

Bob. You're a Doc. Didn't you know you were exposing yourself to the condition just by picking up the telephone to call that guy about the canoe. Didn't you recognise the symptoms. The sudden rushofbloodto the head, the inability to recognise words like " be reasonable, you have 6 boats already" as the cry of concern for your own health as well as the general wellbeing of the family unit ?

Ah what the hell. buy the plans . You only live once. Working on the house sucks.
