Napolean's 6-year presence created a stir on the island, but its most famous native son was a Portugese sailor who was disfigured by his commanding officer for going native while guarding supplies on another island. He asked to be left on St. Helena in the 1500s and reportedly turned the whole island into an ecological Garden of Eden, almost completely covered by heavy forest, which was almost totally stripped off by the Hudson's Bay Company and later settlers. An airport this size would turn it into some kind of Club Med I guess. I'd like to visit.
