He makes 5 foot canoes, too. Takes as long as a big one to make.

Hugh, Nice to see some great craftmanship.
Question for you Hugh: My spouse will be in Augusta at dog show this weekend. I thought that if I could escape and drive a bit farther north to attend the Wood Canoe Show it would be worthwhile. Can you tell me the driving time between Augusta and Millinocket??
I think Burt will be exhibiting.
Wooden Canoe Festival (http://www.katahdinmaine.com/events.asp)
Thanks much, abe

I'd figure about 2 1/2 hours to drive from Augusta to Millinocket...I made that drive about a month ago...I think it's about 130 miles on the highway. I wish I had time to go up to the festival...

Nice pictures, now the details.... smile.gif This canoe is for one of Burt's customers, a 16' design based on the classic Old Town/White canoe, but with a flatter run, thus more stable. Cargo, lakes, rather than fast water.
The decks, outwales, seat frames are cherry, the rest cedar/canvas/spruce in the traditional style.
The 5' is built the same way, and is in great demand as a display boat. The idea came from the Old Town sales models that are now collected, and very rare. I think they were 4 feet long, and were used as eye candy in show windows.
If you get a chance to see Burt's road show, you will see a wonderful display on the several stages of canoe construction using 5' canoes and the tools used.
