I saw the boat in the article last week, and let me tell you it's something...

(Link should now work)

"Turner is banking on this boat. The South Burlington resident is the exclusive North American importer of Comitti boats, a high-end wooden boat built on Lake Como in Italy.

Turner's hoping the distinctive European lines and hand-crafted design will develop a following in North America. At a retail price of $175,000 for this particular model, the following will be exclusive.

Turner will be happy if he sells two this season. Comitti builds only 16 a year.

"It's a limited market, for sure," Turner said. "This is someone who appreciates wooden boats."

Very nice. But for $175,000, do the girls come with it? ;)

If you've got that kind of money to spend on that kind of boat, I'm sure that whatever floats your boat will be ready to hand - as it were ;)

chergui!
You are right. Since I first saw a Riva-boat it has always be my understanding that such a bost can only be driven with a proper set of girls lying around on the varnished mohagoni.

It was my impression in talking with Mike Turner that these boats are of a pretty modern construction. While Riva's were more traditional, these boats are pretty much completely cold-molded, and use a bit of fiberglass on the bottom to help protect them. This means that it is an easy boat to trailer, and you won't have drying out problems, etc.

Also, having seen a couple of modern Hackers have some problems with rot, I think if I was dropping that kind of cash I would interested in getting a boat that was going to last.
