Its very hard to photograph drawing and they are much more detailed than you can tell from these photos.

I did two sets and I framed a set for Phil (CSOH)

I spent a lot of time looking at nautical drawings there are specific kind of flatness and attention to small detail that I noticed on the drawings I liked. I also noticed some drawings had the underwater profile hinted at and I liked that. this is my first attempt. So I copied that particular style.

I think when we get both boats in the water I can get some good photos under sail to work with so I can paint some oil paintings. I would like to give a try and work with light on the sails, sky and water.

Anyone else paint nautical themes?

I agree completely, why don't you mail those to me so that I can better judge the details in person.

Those look really good. Where'd you find the time to do that and put like 7 coats of varnish on in one weekend?

I hope you're being sarcastic.

Scan the drawings, convert them to Jpeg, upload to the net, then post.

By the way, the look quite nice.

Sorry Katherine I'm a bit bleary minded tonight I didn't understand and that was the closest emoticon we have .

By the way, am I the only person who feels the " " does not say confused visually ? It looks more like a sad and upset emotion.

Anyway catching up on the forum. I think I will do more reading then typing tonight.

Joe, just to understand your technique (I’d like to try something similar, sooner or later… smile.gif ), could you scan a couple of details of your drawings?

Wow, those are really nice Joe. Are they digital renderings or hand drawings or what?

I like the underwater detail.

daveThey are digital drawings, Using illustrator and then fine tuning them in photoshop. That was how I could make Phil (CSOH) a copy easy. I want to do them in pen & ink just have to go and get the supplies these are sort of the test sketches for more ambitious works

Tidbit looks really great, compliments. If I may criticize, I think it would have been better to leave more empty space on the top of the sheet, centering the drawing differently.
I for one don’t like the shadows of Dove so much: one loses the precision of the drawing, it’s somewhat confusing, but maybe I'm wrong. In my opinion the spars of Tidbit look wonderful.
Well, I'd really like to try something similar smile.gif ...

Boats in washed charcol, washed with sea water. I found the charcol on board the Sir Joseph Banks, she had been on fire and had been towed to Ulladulla to be restored, so I did a couple of quick drawings while I was visiting her Skipper.

After the fire. Sir Joseph Banks.

A pointy bit. Sir Joseph Banks.

I do like drawing. The images are from my 'Eric Thake' period. Thake was an early minimalist but his work needed more grime.

Antonio, The images are the most accurate record, I do quick drawings of the places I visit if I have a chance. I can't be trusted to tell it how it really is when writing plus I forget the colours, so I take many photographs. I have museum boxes at the National Gallery of Australia with anything that I think could be important showing my development as an artist, in them.

So far they are somewhat empty.

Warren, I was thinking of your phrase “…but his work needed more grime“.
Not sure I have understood your idea. General speaking, it’s a ferocious critic: I mean in that “grime” there is often the difference between a diligent painter and a great artist…Nevertheless I’m discovering Eric Thake only now (on the web), and I like his sign. Probably his own dimension is the quick sketch by pen, or am I wrong? I’m reading he was a photographer too. More a graphic designer then a painter, or I’m wrong? Anyway, just out of curiosity, in the last 7-8 years I have bought many books by Steinberg (quite all his books to be honest, first editions…money is the Tool of the Devil :D , one has to free oneself from money as soon as possible, this is my creed) and now here there is this your Thakle, tempting me again…

Dave, do you use that Latin expression in USA? (it's a tragedy: Latin is studied more in Germany, England or USA then in Italy,I fear... )

Antonio, you are correct about Thake. His best works are his prints, I feel. His wood blocks and lino cuts are masterful and very perceptive for his time ... being perceptive is only seen in today's comedians here in Oz.

Thake is famous for being a person who was always going to travel but spent all of his time doing his art ... critics said, his art travelled to far off places and didn't. He had a wonderful sence of humour. He took the piss-out-of-everybody, especially Melbourne (which means he didn't tolerate Melbourne's pretense and wankers) and he chronicled the highlights of his age with fine incite.

I just like his simple images they make me laugh.

Warren.

Antonio, I studied Latin for 4 years in prep school. That phrase is about the only bit I remember.

Believe it or not but, the Finnish people are big Latin fans. In fact the state radio station broadcasts in Latin on Saturdays.

Dave, my brothers are able to read (read!) Latin and know old Greek, but I for one have NOT studied Latin for 5 years...I wasn't a good student. I remember my Latin teacher, saying sarcastically "Antonio, your translation from Latin looks like a Colosseum, full of holes...". A nightmare. Well, now I regret not having studied Latin, there are so many wonderful Latin poets...this night I'm thinking insistently that life is too short, but it's because I'm still at work, damnation, I have to finish a thing...

Boat Drawing You know Joe, when I ran accross this thread title, I was really hopeing for some kinda lottery on your part. Since your so enamored with cats now I was thinking maybe after you pay the pro boat restorer and get Dove back maybe you'd raffle her off.

Paul

I really want to say how much I appreciate these prints. You did a great job in capturing the reality of our craft, there's nothing like the 'Perfect Profile'...Sort of like the 'half hull' wooden models, only with rigging; that's where the personality lies ;)

When I show these to people, they go "Now that's a real boat"...funny how it works :D

PS Wild Wassa, your work is superb as well, really gets across the inner reality...The technique is quite sophisticated...

So trying to stay within the framework of the forum rules. Phil (CSOH) an I were talking. Just wondering if there would be a viable market for such drawings. They could be made from just a basic plan drawing to get the scale from. Then you could make an 8.5 x 11 or 11x 17 print on good stock buy some frames in bulk and mount them. You could also make greeting cards and 4 x 6 note cards the whole shebang. So what say ye, ya think there would be enough people interested and what would ya charge. Just an idea I'm not soliciting business and if we did we would put a lil add in the wonderful WoodenBoat publications ;)
