Picked up a 1 1/2 HP Johnson outboard today at the local flea market for 50 bucks. It looks pretty good and seems to have good compression. Also gets a good whopping spark. In fact when Carb choke cleaner was sprayed in the air intake and a yank on the cord, it threatened to start up. (Waiting for the rain barrel to thaw out for a serious run). On the model # plate is J2RCTD. I'd like to figure on a way to find out what year Johnson it is. The local library may have a maintenance manual on it. Any clue on ways to find out ? Also the low speed carb adjustment seems to be stuck where should I apply WD 40 to losen it up ? the lower unit's lube fill screw is also stuck . What is bettern then WD 40 ?
If I can get this to be a serious motor I may even build a boat to put it on.
Thanks JD
It's an '83...2HP rope start

The "secret code" for Johnsons (Just between us, right ?). Write the word INTRODUCES, assign each letter a number from 1 to 0 . The second to last and the third to last letters in your model ID contain the coded model year. In your case the C is 8, the T is 3, Yours is an 83.
Here's the rest of the story...save the pic to your PC, and enlarge it until readable

Thanks guys for your input.
Found out the owners manual costs 20 bucks. The local library had a manual dealing with fixing some 4 hp models but little in the way of the 2 hp that I have.
I did get it started today. :D Runs fine with a little manipuation of the choke to get it to run at low speeds. Which indicates to me the low speed mixture control needs some attention. It's stuck. It also seems to pump cooling water through the system OK. smile.gif
Anybody have some idea how to get at it or better yet scan a page from a Johnson 83, 2 hp owners manual dealing with the carbureator adjustments. Or losen up this adjustment without forcing the turns ? smile.gif
Can't see spending 20 bucks for a manual when is spent 50 for the engine.
Thanks again
