I'm convinced that one of the best tools on a boat is a whistle. The wife perks up, and dogs come running... even children have been known to smile! (...it's on my zipper).

I like to bring my low "D" whistle sailing - it's good for slow airs ;)

More pics of the boat?

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I've got a pennywhistle, a pitchpipe, a bagpipe chanter, and a flutophone type thing belowdecks  , but alas, only the emergency whistle on my PFD! :D

Oh, the cacophonic potential! But which way do the dogs run? :D

Now that I've pretty much lost my voice, I need a good emergency whistle. Where's a good place to find one?

Meer--try REI, or campmor.com has a flock to choose from.

Also available at REI.

REI also sells the Fox 40 http://www.rei.com/product/724.htm which is smaller and not quite as loud. "Better" if you're trying to shave grams from your pack or pocket kit, but on a PFD that's not a problem.

Add a signal mirror to the lanyard.

I'm primarily looking for something to put on my keychain. Urban survival, but works in the woods would be good too.

I saw this one at REI (as well as the whistle suggested by Todd):

My whistle looks just like that, except it has a compartment accessed by screwing off one end. In there is a piece of paper...a form...on which you write your name, address, gender and dentist's phone number....for when they find you. :D

really

Interesting, Tim. That happens to be my boat. All of the pictures, in fact. The first one is from Fred Shell before she was launched. She's hull #001 that Fred built as a prototype for the Swity line of boats. The photo's are her with a white hull, by the man who bought her from Fred.
