42 keel entrants and up to 9 of the M class 18 foot centreboard racing yachts as at this morning the 16th.
We have fine weather forecast( perhaps a bit light ?) but with that number of boats we will have a great 3 day event.

Briefing is tonight and racing commences tommorrow( friday) with a harbour race. Saturday is the around Rangitoto island race and Sunday another harbour event.

One of my crew has announced he has a bottle of rum on whether we can beat the 57 ft Waitangi in our gaff A division of only 4 boats. I pointed out to him that a. we're 41 ft and b.we've never beaten it to date.
but he's a glass half full kind of guy and just shrugged. :D

This will be fun...bigggg fun.

can we beat her across the line.....
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid195/pa855ac4d01844761e55024c97f96baec/f130c806.jpg
She's got a hot skipper and although we can peg her back in short tacking normally , she sails away from us on a reach/run......
ahh .. who cares

yeeee haww.

thanks :D we'll need it.

9 boats A bermudan classic ( to 1949) 8 boats B bermudan classic

4 gaff A: Waitangi 57 ft, Ariki 54 ft, Rawene 42 ft or so ,Waione 41 ft( we're the smallest of these but have to give everyone else time. handicap is out of it for us.)

4 gaff B:, Jonquil the Buzzards Bay 25, Thelma the Pardeys boat, Imogen the Albert Strange and Frances another Auckland logan classic. Jonquil should whup them all but who knows for h/cap. Prolly Thelma..

and 17 modern classics ( 1950 to 1975.)

Several boats missing from the vintage fleet due to restoration and other reasons but still good stuff. :D :D

First day was good. very light .. enough for us to do about 3 to 4 knots for the first hour but she dropped away to nothing plus outgoing tide and we sat in the stream. we anchored 5 times! In fact we won a prize for anchoring 5 times. The breeze finally came in about 2 pm and we had a great sail for the last 2 hours( approx).6 th across the line in the whole fleet so we're pleased. All those guys in front ran kites and there was only 2 vintages there in the first 5 boats. 50 ft Tawera 1934 (IIRC) and 60 ft Ranger 1938. not bad for a gaffer from '07. :D

Hope for a bit more of a constant breeze tommorrow.

before the start, Rawene and Ranger

John B
02-18-2006, 04:11 AM
Yes we did! 1 bottle for the anchoring 5 times and 1 bottle for the best dressed crew.LOL. Our buddy turned up in the am with white t shirts exhorting the marine fittings company he works for so we got best dressed crew for all looking the same. :D tongue.gif

Another desperately character forming morning this morning with just a gasp of air to keep us pointed the right way. After a couple of hours a light sea breeze came in and we sailed the 20 something miles around Rangitoto island. In the last hour the breeze came up but just like yesterday the absolutely best sailing of the day was after we crossed the finish line... there we slid up the harbour clicking 8 at times and just revelling in it.

The rum. Now there's a point of contention there because the day David was on Waitangi was the day our Tony wasn't on Waione. Tony was there today but David? nowhere to be seen. But we've beaten them both days anyway so........

We'll see. ;)

:D :D
Prize overhauled us on that run and I told Downhill Bill( the helmsman at the time) to follow them in against the rocks to get out of the tide.. but to stay out just a bit. " use them as our depth sounder"
we sailed around the foreshore like that for a couple of miles.
I found out last night that the hard left they did at one point was because they kissed a rock with the heel of their keel. ROFL.

John B
02-19-2006, 04:53 AM
Last day racing today. Prize kissing a rock was funny but Tawera , the magnificent restored mid 30's Logan... 50 ft.. well she smacked one hard today. She had to be pulled off. Pics later of race .too tired.
absolutely frustrating ,no wind for hours.

Hells bells. We were too far out and didn't see any of that. I commented to the crew that she wasn't going well( at the infintessimal pace the fleet was moving at) but it wasn't until we got to the prizegiving that we were told she'd pranged. Bet he was glad Martin wasn't racing in Scout eh Jase. ;) ( The mast tow boat is his as well.)

Well done Jase. Crisp shots you've got there and beautiful with it. I can see I'm going to upgrade my camera and take some lessons . :D

You know they took me off the helm yesterday don't you.I got so slacked off at Islington bay buoy. We had a bad knock right on it when everyone behind and in front got lifted and then an apartment block sized yacht ( good ole Ta Aroa)sailed over us and left us wallowing . They made me "go and check the set of the topsail" and gave me a rum. If I could have got off right then I would have.
But yes. point taken. 3 division guns and 3 handicap wins for 3 races is pretty good. :D
I think I like the teams result best though. Baileys rule! Waione and Thelma... the old team.LOL.

Pete restored the boat in the UK for a customer along with a few others. They were domiciled in Heybridge basin( like Ian wright). Pete bought her off that owner and She's been here for 2 seasons now. I think he shipped her out about middle 05 after sailing Cowes week on her. She only barely fitted inside a shipping container ( beam)and he had to put a saw through the mast to get it in.

towing her out day 2

Lin and Larry Pardey are figuring out Thelmas buttons now they tell me. They only set a topsail on her for the first time a couple of weeks ago but they really made her go with their trademark secret weapon.. a nylon drifter.

Thanks guys. Russ It ain't flawless but after last weeks miserable panic where
A. it wouldn't go up properly( a hank I'd added was "chattering" and gripping)
and B. wouldn't set properly because I'd made three changes instead of 1 change at a time.
Its a lot better though. still has some girts but we had it setting and flowing fine hard on the wind so... ;)

well it's difficult to say the least. I normally try to keep it somewhere handy and snap a few off before the skipper notices the jib trim is bad :D

John B
02-20-2006, 06:58 PM
pre start is no worry Wassa and it was so light we'd just settle in and start snapping. We also generally swap helmsman on our boats depending on stress levels. light like that  I steered for the first few hours on the wind in nothing sunday and they took me off when I started muttering. Steered the whole race on friday .But in the 'round Rangi'on sat I jumped off after the stressfull first 2 hours and handed over to our other upwind man for the next 2 or 3.Then he handed over to Downhill Bill ,who brought us home.

so there's some time for camera.

Jase who was skipper/helm on your boat ? 3 different ones?

Label actually reads 'Hormone Cream' to counter symptoms of hot flushes bought on by men-o-pause. Can cause problems in children who come into contact with user.
