"Atlantic Hurricane Season to Be Above Normal, Government Says
Miami, May 19 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coasts may be threatened by as many as 15 tropical storms, including six to nine hurricanes, during the 2003 season, government forecasters said.

The number of storms during the Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to Nov. 30 will be above normal, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in an annual forecast. As many as four of the hurricanes this season will be ``major'' storms with winds of over 110 miles an hour, the forecast said.

``This is the first time since 1999 that conditions have the potential for producing a very active season,'' Gerry Bell, a meteorologist from the administration's Climate Prediction Center, said in a press release on the center's Web site.

Last year there were 12 named storms, four of which became hurricanes."

Sure enough and the majority of the coastal population has no idea of the potential of something like the '38 hurricane  . It still boggles my mine every time I think about it. It was before my time, but my dad has told me the horror stories many times.
I read in a book called 'The Storm That shook the World' that the sismic station in Sitka Alaska reported an earthquake had struck Long Island when the hurricane hit.
