The "bail" on my 15 lb. CQR anchor is 5/8" in diameter. That aughta be hell fer stought. It looks to me that any shackle with enough space to fit over it will have a pin too big to fit through a link in the recommended 1/4" chain. What is normally used? Is a swivel indicated?

My thought/understanding is that you go for the biggest shackle that will fit on the chain. One of the type that is more round in shape rather than D shape.

Look at the "Long D shackles" listed in the catalogs.

Go a size up on the chain.

Cut the shackle off and fit a swivel direct from anchor to chain. shackles get stuck in the bow roller.
I'm still about to get round to the auto self deploying tender brake,,,,,,, any day now. smile.gif

1/4" chain is indeed a bit light, really. But if you've already bought it, never mind!

Put two shackles together, one larger one with pin through anchor, one lesser beast with pin through chain. If you want it to self stow in the hawse, cut the end off the shackle pins.

Common Sense! Yeah right. That is one of the most dangerous thing one can imagine in the mind of the ignorant.

The reason I asked about a swivel is that I have not seen one in the catalouges that seem to be strong enough for an anchor.

The two shackles, Andrew, will solve the problem of making what I see in the catalogues work. Thanks.

No hurry Ian.

I have not bought the chain for this anchor. I started to order it but the lady at Hamilton Marine challenged the 1/4" as not being heavy enough though that is what the CQR manufacturer's web site recommended for the 15lb. anchor.

Thanks all.

Ah........I'd always been taught & always heard that you don't want to use a swivel on an anchor as they do not have the tensil strength required & will always end up being a weak link? (Of course I have not actually looked up the specs for swivels vs. chain vs. shackles, which I supposed I should have done before adding my .002 :D )
