She was moored dockside in Newport, RI right next to the fishdock a few weeks ago and was amazing looking. Incredibly wide at the deck but very narrow on the water line making for a hugely flared hull. Big big dinghy.

I note ( with surprise) that one of the designers is Greg Elliot. He's designed a lot of fast boats in NZ but a one in particular is a schooner with what amounted to short gaffs at the head of each sail. It was a purpose built reaching machine with a keel right back in the boat and a canard foil like a centreboard in the bow for lateral plane for windward work. It went to Aussie a few years ago.

The Transatlantic W to E sailing record, is, I believe, held by Steve Fossett - 4 days, 17 hours, 28 min, 6 sec, Oct 2001.
The 24 hour distance record for a sailing vessel is 694.78 nautical miles, 28.95 knots, by Maiden II in June 2002
The Sailing Speed Record of 46.52 knots is held by Cunningham, McKeon and Daddo aboard Yellow Pages Endeavour, set back in 1993.
Oops, did I forget to mention that all these records are held by vessels with more than one hull. If it's a sailing speed record, it's a sailing speed record. These guys might be having a lot of fun - but they are still days behind the sailing speed record time for that run.
What next? A record class for monohulls sailed only by sailors over 45 years old who only eat Wheaties on the voyage?

Nice story and nice picture in the Wall Stret Journal (D8 Leisure & Arts page).

One of today's doccos on BBC World (it will be replayed a few times over the next few days). She took two days off the old monohull record IG. Her nav station looks like something out of Startrek, ... crossed with a B2 bomber.
Warren.
ps, She has a 'Melges' paint job on her hull, ... a paint job that isn't a paint job. This is becoming a real trend on boats, ... I like a bit of minimalism.
