Thanks to Dave the legend chromed domed white bearded gnome Fleming I received a few pics from his massive collection the other day... and I cant stand NOT sharing at least this one with you fellas and sheilas!!

I want to go back in time!!!

1901 Regatta... yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeflaminhaaaaaa!!

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid42/p8f7f4829ecfc09de1f97ae46a9560270/fcee99c2.jpg

Sorry Dave mate I just couldnt wait to show these fellas and sheilas that one!!! Brilliant shot!! so I wonder how theyd go in a blow???

Actually looking at these boats reminds me of some Aussie designs Ive recently seen in a book sent me by the legendary forumite of style Ironmule... I was wondering if any of you fellas on the East Coast got any photos of old regattas? particular interest would be 18fters from the early 1900s... Britannia and Taree would be nice to see!

Britannia built 1919 by Wee Georgie Robinson... carried 1000ft of sail running before the wind she carried... wait for it!... 2800 squ ft of sail!!... on an 18fter!! geeeeeeehosaphat!!!

Bowsprit was 21ft her boom with ringtail spar extended on it measured 42ft her 3 peice spinniker pole was 45ft overall... givin an overall length of 71ft!!! {I sorta thing they meant 87ft but whos quibbling about 10 or so feet on an flamin 18ft flamin boat!!! ... Shecarried a crew of 15... we are talking about an 18ft boat here!

I mean are we Aussies MAD or what?!! yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeha!! :D

If my scanner was working Id scan the limited info I have into imagestation for yer!! What an aweflaminsome hoot it woulda been to be onboard one such as Britannia!! :D ...or one of the above!

Take it easy

Don't you lot have that 18' unlimited class sailing in Sydney? Seems like a similar sort of insanity ;)

we've got some vintage 18 footers ( replicas)coming here early next year from Sydney for all the events. I can't wait to see them. And our big classics regatta in early feb too. that's going to really be something with boats from 1886 on racing.

Meerkat, We have a few 18fters on Lake Burley Griffin, in Canberra. The acceleration of the craft is incredible, if you can keep one upright. No one around here can.

Have you seen the cost of a new boat?

Warren.

ps, I thought that 'Fatboy' was a bad name, until I saw 'Team Smeg'.

Warran; Nope, I have not seen "Fatboy" nor any really recent 18' pics. There was a flurry of interest/press reporting a few years back (80's, 90's?) here in the US and I recall seeing these tiny plumb bowed boats with huge long bowsprits overflowing with yahoos (definately more then 3!) wearing clothes too gaudy even for a Texan to be caught in ;) The huge expanse of sails where beslobbered with sponsor adverts too. The Sydney Opera Hall was frequently seen in the background of these pics.

Did somebody say "time machine?"

Let me know how it works... ;)

Meerkat, 18ft unlimited. This is the only Class that I know of where the sail size is unrestricted. They where originally working boats, it was the sail area that was the revolution.

Yahoos? (from Gulliver's Travels), in Oz we call them Yobbos.

I'll try to find photos of Yendys, which is Sydney spelt backwards (12-13 crew) and Fatboy (17-23 crew).

I'll do a search of News Limited's archives first.

Warren.

Yendys can be found at http://www.seaheritage.asn.au Yendys with a small crew, about 11 plus the Skipper.

I found Fatso from Spirit Yachts, a fatty from Couta Boats but the real 'Fatboy' eludes me. I did post a shot of Fatboy, on the thread about the 'the World's ugliest boat' a few months ago. I titled the photo the 'World's ugliest sails'. Unfortunately I removed the shot. Has anyone taken a copy? It was a b/w photograph, blue toned.

I wonder if you copied the photo then, Dave Flemming? I hope so.

Warren.

I have a picture published as a suppliment to YACHTSMAN, November 2, 1899, of KERIKI, 22ft oa Sidney Harbour Class. Bowsprit maybe as long as the boat. Jib flying from sprit end to masthead. Gaffer. Yard and club topsail. Clubheaded spinnaker flying from the top of the topsail yard. Spinnaker pole longer than the boat showing feet of bend under the compression of the sheet while the topsail yard bends forward with the strain. It reminds me that the topsail/gaff/mainsail/mainsheet work as backstay to the spinnaker. The spinnaker club/yard is probably about 6' long. I count 11 people aboard.

I just thought Id throw the pic of Yendys up for those with lazy clicking fingers ;) Thanks Wassa

http://www.seaheritage.asn.au/SmlBt/Skiffs/YendLg.jpg

Lookit all them bodies!!! :D

Reconstructed snub nosed, wide beam 18foot skiff.

Built in 1924 by Charles Hayes for Norm Blackman who raced it very successfully with the Sydney Flying Squadron, with a crew up to 15, until the 1942/3 season.

Yendys is one of the few surviving examples of the 'Big Beamers', the wide bodied 18 footers, that raced on the harbour before 1933, after which a new seven foot beam type began to emerge.

The name Yendys is Sydney spelt backwards.

Donated to the Sydney Heritage Fleet by Mr J Allen of Rozelle in 1977 and restored by apprentices from Cockatoo Island between 1977 and 1983 under the supervision of Mr George McGoogan and Mr Russel Barton courtesy of the Vickers Cockatoo Dockyard Ltd.

Length:
Beam:
Depth: 5.48m (18ft)
2.22m (7ft 4in)
0.68m (2ft 3 1/2in)

It worked !

the thing that blows me away with these boats is that they run a spinnaker off the end of the gaff, plus ringtail etc.

I used the term "18' unrestricted" in more of a generic sense and not as a particular class, although I did think that the boats I'm thinking of where/are limited to that length. What are those tiny boats in gaudy colors with HUGE suits of sails with huge sponsor logos on them sailed by mobs of crew (relative to boat size) in Sydney (and other?) Harbor(s)? I recall one pic of a boat with a big ABC (Aust. Broadcasting Corporation) logo on it, possibly with a big "4" or "7" (Channel 4 or 7?) as part of it. Boats where screeching along throwing buckets of spray as they went.

It "come up" for you because your browser has it in it's cache. I copied the link from your post, and eliminated the .orig.jpg at the end, Like the Rodent said.

Barry, the shipwright doing the woodwork on Grantala is off to NZ for the America's Cup regatta in the old 18 footers from about 22nd January. He is a dual world champion, sailing with two others in a total crew of five. All up they have 11 world championships between them, with one guy having 8. They are sailing a narrow-beamer - and Barry is threatening to get me a ride on one of the boats.

When he gets back, we will be ready and waiting for him - with one side deck removed and ready to be replaced.
