I don't believe it   this is now the third time I've started this - poof, it's just disappeared

So, I've got three bits of 3/4" threaded rod thru the aft end of the keel/gripe scarf, been snugging them up, per Dave's suggestion, (got the 3rd one in Sunday) and noticed that the reason the scarf is not closing up forward is that the gripe is splitting (which I knew), and that the keel extends further forward (which I didn't know) because it is under a bit of angle bronze which was put in to reinforce things.

So, I looked at this for about 20 seconds, grabbed the Sawzall, and cut the keel at the bottom end of the bronze. THat improved things by about 1/4".

Question: Should I add another bolt forward to try and close that some more (I have cut all the other bolts across the scarf).

I've also build the forward tripod for the wire I'll be stringing along the boat to take some data points.

Question: Any reason for that wire to be level? Seems as long as it is replaced in the same location, that should be OK.

It's a bit warm in Our Lady, even with my Aunt's BIG old window fan running full tilt. Anyone have any experience with these structures with respect to them staying on terra firma when the ends are opened up?

Phew... made it this time

Cut.....the.....kkkkeel? Even when I did it, my hands were shaking, Ed. Ok, memory serves that this is what that big hunk of Angelique is for.

Try putting some screened vents in the top to let out the hotter air and maybe it'll circulate a little on it's own. Screened to keep the hornets out. But it's still too hot to work.

Well, I'm still awake, so I'll horn in. Get it? Ok, so it wasn't funny, sorry. Maybe I should go to bed too. Anyway, your wire doesn't have to be perfect. Just be able to duplicate the positioning in the future. Sometimes a little surgery is necessary. Especially when you're trying to salvage existing structure and close up some gaps too. Shame that you weren't able to post some pictures, you and Rich always present good ones. Sometimes you're better off fabricating a new piece like the gripe or a forefoot knee instead of trying to torture things back together with all-thread, clamps, shores, etc. Maybe give some thought to what kind of stress and strain you may be imparting to adjacent structures of your boat during this process. I had a similar problem once, I elected to replace a forefoot knee instead of fighting it, the keel and lower part of the stem into position. I might be off base here, with out pictures. Good luck Ed. Is some of that excessive heat from the steam rolling out of your ears?

It's been really hot here too Ed.I'm getting nothing done until it cools off, at least a little. Replacing the plastic with screen in a few spots should help move some air around. Wish I could do that with my windowless Garage right about now. We had an hour long power outage here today and everyone freaked out and thought it was terrorists. Looks like it's gonna be a long hot summer in many ways.Stay

hi,
to cool off a bit, try rolling on some cheap white paint on the plastic cover for your shed. It doesn't stick that well, but it only has to last for a few months.

Ohhhhh, I feel like Hercules... I've been down at my Mum's all day cleaning her barn. Forunately I wasn't alone, SWMTMH and my Sister were there too. Truth be told SWMTMH did most of the work... I did pick up some good stuff, including some piano wire!!!.

I'm not hoping to salvage the keel or gripe, just hoping to pin them together to help hold this old bundle of sticks together when I finally get around to goosing her up a bit. Maybe I'm being overzealous???

Hopefully the web site will be up and running soon. I am keeping up with the pictures.

Airflow is what you need. The suggestions of vents up top is good possibly put a fan up there also. It would be nice if you could make a couple panels on the bottom roll up. You want to be able to put them down in a storm so you do not have to bail out the boat or even stop work. Alternately, when it gets too hot here we change hours. Do the south american thing and go to work early, rest during the heat of the afternoon and work in the evening.

Cheer up Ed, the heatwave is suppose to break tomorrow and be back down to 80 for Friday! smile.gif

Don't suppose all the problems you've benn having are related to the massive humidity changes going on? Just a thought...

IF my memory serves me the bottom of "the church of our lady" has ply sheets has it not? why not take a couple of them off this would allow free movement of air? Definantly worth the effort to get some vents up top but remember down low too!

Of course my memory could be way off here and shes all plastic sheeting but I seem to recall ply somewhere in that "shed" of yours... sigh wheres them pictures mate Im feeling like a right goose here if Im wrong that is which Im not admitting to! :D

Whats up with the site? this is the second without pics mate!! must be as frustrating for yourself as for us waiting to see how your getting on.

Take it easy

Have a fan and it is running.

Opened up the lower side toward the trees. (this is the side away from the one seen in most pictures) I had opened up the upper rear (also toward the trees) back in April. The side facing the open I'm really hesitant to open up as that is where the prevailing summer wind comes from, and the new keel is sitting right inside, so it would be more exposed to whatever the weather might be. I'm thinking of adding another sheet-of-ply door to the back, like the one on the front.

I got both tripods installed today, and they seem "pretty" secure. Each is triangulated with 2x3s secured to life-rail stanchion mounts, the aft one is further secured to the backstay fitting, and I will likewise secure the forward one to the head stay fitting.

For the measuring, should I "tag" the wire with a bit of tape at each point from which I take a measurement?

Oh, and I don't expect to save the gripe - it's in pretty bad shape, just wanting to hold things together when it comes to lifting and pulling time.

Try a mist unit for your fans. They can be found on the inter net or at a lot of home supply places. They are used a lot in green houses down here in the summer and also at out door bars like Schooners Dock Bar in Key West. They will provide a lot of cooling and the moisture will not hurt the wood on these hot summer days.

I will be using a couple on Sarah after we get all this running around done. We will also be putting the shade cloth back up now that the jacking up and the ballast was removed. Last summer I would wet the shade cloth and the tarp a few times a day to help with the heat.
