depressing weather here. storm warning for the gulf ... 65 knots apparently and it's persisting down. Linking also to what Stiletto has posted about values over in the bilge make me go and dip into our christmas cruise album.

Nice morning at Oke bay .. strange with the fog /cloud hanging on cape Brett. We rowed around a bit in peace ( 5 of us in 4 dinghies)and then got raided by a tourist boat chasing dolphins. it was exciting seeing the dolphins but it was weird being surrounded all of a sudden by 30 + snorkel/mask/ flipper wearing humans. we were people-watching the people dolphin-watching.

Thank's for the "Friday post" they kept me entertained through a long Winter. They also redoubled my wish to get to Kiwiland.

John, I will be in your world in September. Can't wait! I have dreamed of coming to New Zealand -- never thought I would ever really get to visit your country.

sing out when you get here Ariel. sept can be a bit unpredictable weather wise, spring equinox an all that.. we'll probably be on the hardstand at Okahu bay around then.

Hi John,
It's always great to see your pic's. Even better when they encourage people to our part of the world.
Ariel, what sort of boating are you into?

I will, John. We will chat between now and then. I will fly into Auckland and leave for Vanuatu to sail the Outer Banks on SOREN LARSEN. Won't be in Auckland long coming, but heading back plan to see some of the sites. Perhaps some guidance from you would be in order? Saw that magnificent movie "Whale Rider" and would like to go to the coast where it was filmed. We will stay in touch....

I was so excited over getting a response I didn't answer the other questions. My wooden boat is a catboat(PYXIS)--plywood version of the Beetle cat, a homemade boat that has been with me 6 years now--but I also have a fiberglass sloop, ARIEL, that has owned me for 22 years. Incidentally, PYXIS means the compass and is part of the Argo constellation or was until they broke them apart. Like the Southern Cross they appear in your hemisphere. Hope in September Pyxis will be visible...thanks for warm reception.

Hi Zane , long time no hear :D

I like it because
whale bay is unreal
it was a perfect christmas cruise with weather like that for 3 weeks
and that's what it was like all the time.. boats and kids all over the place ( 3 families cruising together.) IIRC there was only "our" 3 boats in the bay for the day. There was a roll there that day though, and it's an exposed coast, so we moved on for the night.( stayed there for new years eve on the way up the coast though)

Ps . thanks to you Hwyl and Garrett for the nice comments too.

even I'm Waione'd out
Does that mean we will get to see what she'd look like as a yawl. :D

Much as I'd prefer the schoooner idea ,the first drawing for yawl rig has been done Paul.
It's quite a common thing to do when you want to split sail area with a few precedents here as well as US/UK.
I reckon we'll hold off until Kirsty really starts to struggle with the mainsheet ( time IS moving on after all and I have to accept that as she gets older she will get weaker) and then then I'll give her the good news that she's not really going to have to get past a mainmast stuck in the middle of our cabin. :D
Either change the rig or buy her a gym membership I spose

Hi John,
I have been lurking but busy at work and family so not doing a lot of sailing or writing.
Our main point of note is fitting a roller furler and new genoa which I have not had a chance to use. Last three opertunities have been blowen out and now I am changing job I will be loosing my accumulated leave.
Still have my eyes on the Coastal Classic though.

Ariel, When time gets closer let us know what time if any you may have for sailing. We keep our boat on the Eastern side of the Coromandel penisular near a place called Whitianga if you are looking at a map, 2.5 hrs drive from Auckland.
Any excuse for a sail is a good one.

What boat will you go on for the Coastal Zane?
We're racing the Pelin again this year in the winter series( 3 races down, we're leading the series at this early stage) and we'll more than likely be doing it on her again.

Probably a Farr 38 "Mint" from Gulf Harbour. Belongs to my ex boss. But no practice sails for the team planned until August due to work comitments and she is out of her Cat 3. I did the 2002 one on her.
If that falls over either I will bring Mischief over for the cruising div or go begging a ride.
