...can lose your shirt in the canoe business instead? Who wants to smell bread baking or be slathering mayo and mustard all day when you could be slathering polyester resin and breathing those sweet styrene vapors?

They do make pretty boats. I've paddled a couple of them and liked them. They were too pretty for the kind of paddling I did at the time, though. Instead I wound up with a series of Royalex tuffies like the Mad River ME, Blue Hole OCA, and even a Whitesell.

I've still got the OCA nearly twenty years later. It's the butt-ugliest, most beat up, bent and twisted thing you've ever seen. But 'ol Mean Mean Green Green was one of the best $50 investments I ever made.

I can't imagine the compliance costs of making GRP boats in the VOC hell of California. Eureka-Arcata is a beautiful place, but the business might be more successful somewhere else.
