About a year ago I purchased a metallization gun on ebay in the US. A new gun costs in the area of $15,000. The post office here in Florianopolis told me that a 60% tax is added on items ship from outside the country. However, the package arrived at my front door with no tax added????? Anyone know the real story? I want to buy more stuff from ebay but 60% additional makes the stuff kind of high priced.

I am not clear on wether you paid the tax or not, and it's none of my biz. Let me tell you this story maybe you can make some use of it.
A company based in the US has a plant in Ireland so they can supply that market. Then things change and they want to move some of the manufacturing machinery back to the US. This will also somehow create a huge import tax bill if the container is labeled what it really is which is precision grinding machinery, so they took the tables off of the machines (wich should be done anyway) and filled a container with the disassembled machines, and called it metal scrap. No or at most minimal tax on scrap.

Wow, 60% is a pretty stiff tariff! Did the post office tell you anything about what types of goods that tariff applies to? Surely everything imported to Brasil from the US is not hit with a 60% tariff.
I do find it rather shocking how willing people and corporations are to engage in obvious fraud (as in the story told by Gary).

Look into the "Overseas Private Investment Corp" and be prepared to get a real jolt, not a few buks saved by a hard working small AMERICAN business.
By the way, have you ever traveled overseas and let your wife bring back that fancy diamond ring not declared? (maybe not you personaly but you know it's done)
Edit..
By the way, ALL of that machinery was originally produced in the US not very far from your RI, then shipped new to Ireland originally.

This is not the bilge, and furthermore I don't want to muck up Gerald's thread, so all I am going to say is that I think fraud should be labeled as such and not justified by excuses like "everyone does it" or "it's an unfair law."

I'm not really getting very far. I am going to Itajai next week and will talk to some of the folks there that work with inbound shipments.
A complete radar unit, sonar etc. etc. just went for the price of a bunch of bananas on ebay. I don't mind paying the price for the unit but am afraid of being held hostage at this end.
If I get any info. I will pass it on and we will test the waters.

Gerald;
I don't know if I can be of any help at all, but I have two young Japanese Izuzu engineers who are coming to your city in late October to go surfing. The'll be staying in the Maria do Mar Hotel and going over to Mocambique.
They are always allowed to bring in engineering samples without tariff and, sometimes, they don't bring them back. ;)
We have, locally, the Furuno Mfg. company that makes excellent marine radar, sat/nav,auto pilot and most other marine electronics. They are truly good products ! BUT they won't be nearly as cheap as eBay. Still, without shipping, custom tariffs, etc. they might be comparable.
If you're interested, let me know and I'll talk to them about bringing it over to you.

What a terribly generous offer Joe !
What you suggest does work though, as I learnt when American associates were able to bring down quite a bit of stuff for my boat.
Would be fun if these guys were able to carry samples of 4-valve-per-cylinder, 350 HP V-8 diesels that Isuzu supplies(or designed)for GM´s Silverado ;)

What Carioca said! Thank you for the fine offer. Right now I am working around the electronics. The conduit is in place to pull the wires but I am directing my $ in a different direction. I sure hate to think of buying new but it could come to that?
I live on the north end of the island However, my associate lives near to where they will be staying. His brother is into the surfing, is the local hot shot, and builds performance boards. My associate also has horses and he is always happy when he can talk a couple of people into going with him on the damn things.
If they are interested we can fill them full of local knowledge. I will be going to the boat show in October but short of that I am always close to the shop.

Gerald, you're welcome. If, later, you find I can help, drop me a note.
They've asked me to go down with them twice but I'm a bit too old to be trying to ride those surfboards. I'm more into the scuba diving.
If I do decide to take a vacation down your way I'll drop a line and we'll meet up for some of that fine food.
Good luck with your parts.
