The 'thing' is really coming along, it's the right way up and my mate and I got most of the deck on today. Now some may have seen the pic that Mike Field posted of the boat, it is a sailing, motoring paddle wheeler thing. I/we are building it without any plans, only a festival pamphlet taped to the shed wall and a few thumbnail sketches on the shed blackboard is all. The paddles are dummies, it will actually be driven by a small outboard tucked away in from the stern. Because of space restrictions and the desire to make it look as much like the wooden boat festivals logo I want to hang a rudder on the stern and use it to do the steering with the o/board locked 'ahead'.
Question: How deep into the water should the rudder go?
The boat is 5'0" wide, 12'0" overall length but the last 2'0" (with the rudder hanging off it!) is not in the water. I realise that the tiller will have to be quite long and may need an extension but it will be more "Nautical" feeling than swinging on the handle of an outboard.
The speed will be fairly slow I guess, does that affect the required size of the rudder?
Thanks in anticipation.... ;)

Guess (and a guess only) would be about 24". I have a Weekender that I am building, the OAL, width, etc are close to what you describe. Approximately 25" - 26" are in the water on this design.
Through it in the hopper and see what else boils to the surface. :D
