Saturday, my wife and daughter go to China for about three weeks (Guangzho, Beijing, and Xian). I'll do my best to take photos of junks, sampans, and the like. We have one dinner "cruise" scheduled aboard a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat (small).
We're going to China to pick up our adopted (well, soon-to-be-adopted) daughter Sabrina, who is 20 months old, which is the very best part. See http://www.thestoryofyou.com/journeytosabrina.html

Well, somewhere way down in the archive is a thread I posted about yulohs, when I was living in Beijing. It might well be pre-2000 server crash, in which case it is no more.
Beijing and Xian are both as dry as a bone; no boats in either.
Guangzhou is a lot wetter...
Old Chinese expression: "North of the River, a cart, south of the River, a boat!" ("The River" means the Chang Jiang, the Yangtze Kiang)
Wooden boatbuilding is dying out very fast, due to no more wood! China does have a fabulous network of inland waterways and canals, far exceeding even what we have in Europe, but the tourist potential of these is as yet un-noticed.

I'm sure Guangzho is my best bet. Who knows if I'll have time.
Work on the boat (restoration of a 1956 Scottie Craft) has slowed down during preparations for the trip, and might just grind to a halt when we get back. Right now, Sabrina is my highest priority. Good thing I've got a wooden skiff to play around with in the meantime.

We have a good friend whose daughter came from Guangzhou, and we have also met another couple whilst sailing whose daughter came from there. Both little girls are three now and both are fine.
I found some photos on the Internet of the town where I carried out my experiment with a yuloh:

Zhouzhuang is not far from Shanghai, but, as with most Chinese tourist attractions, it gets very crowded.

See you soon again smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif , with little Sabrina. Looks that your first daughter does not need "cute pills" either ;)
I don't know about China, but we have lots of wooden boats here, most of them inheriting a lot from the Chinese crafts. Many are still being built, mostly in the Mekong delta, but I know that not many more in China, just for the reason Andrew gave: shortage of wood.
Have a nice trip.
"you did not grow under my heart, but in it"....I love that! smile.gif
