Anybody else make it to the Georgetown WoodenBoat Show yesterday? Some really nice entries esp. in the canoe and kayak catagories. The boatbuilding was won in a froghair under 2hrs. Just about 15 mins. short of the record. Fun time and a peaceful day were had by the wife and me.

Liz and I were there with Bluejacket 24 "Liz" in the water. We make it most years and think it is the best one day boatshow we ever get to. Some really nice work is shown there and the whole affair is friendly to both spectators (free) and exhibitors with low cost, good food and great town support. The boatbuilding contest is handled better than any other I have attended.

We followed up by trailing "Liz" to Beaufort, SC where I visited a builder of a stretched version of Bluejacket and cruised a bit in the beautiful marshes. While there I had the oportunity to drive and observe a Dave Gerr Offshore 28 dory for the first time.

Only negative was that a rear axle bearing in the van burned out and a new axle and bearing was needed. Luckily, we were right at a repair place (sort of the shade tree kind) where we were able to scrounge an axle from a Dodge van in a junkyard and get back on the road, although the 400 mile drive home through the night was no fun.

More than you might want to know but it's just part of the experience.

Ammended to add that we drove over the new Cooper River suspension bridge in Charleston on the way to Beaufort and it is spectacular. Of course, at over $600 mil it ought to be.

That was a great show when I went two years ago, I would like to have gone again. I do think this last summer was (still is) a good summer to stay away from the coast, though.

I watch the Cooper River bridge being built when I went to the Charleston Maritime Festival around May 15th. There is a really good website for this bridge at www.cooperriverbridge.org (http://www.cooperriverbridge.org/)
. If you like construction there are plenty of detailed photos and narrative.
