I bought my brother a CQR as a wedding present .It seemed a practical and symbolic gift .He had a 25 foot sloop and the literature indicated the 15 lb. was the one to get . The chandler ,a believable person of some experience , warned me away from it ,saying that small size didn't have the reputation of the bigger CQRs'. This was on the Connecticut coast .I took his advice and bumped up to a 20 pounder ,still a breeze to manage .

Having this second anchor saved my brothers' bacon on his honeymoon cruise ,which was gratifying ( I knew he'd only been carrying one before).I'll never know if the 15 pounder would have held for them. I do wonder why a practically new anchor would be for sale .

Personally, I think ANY 15 or 20 lb. anchor is too small for a twenty five foot boat, but I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy. I use one of these 15 # CQRs for my 13 foot motorboat and it works great.

Our 16ft messing-about-in boat has a 10lb CQR - these have not been made for many a year - and it is a jolly good anchor for that boat. I certainly recall the advice that 15lb ones will not always cut through weed, though I can recall literally throwing a 15lb kedge over in a tearing hurry from a 30ft sloop with engine failure in the strong tide of the river Exe and it held miraculously.

Mirelle carries a 35 and a 45 - the 35 was the bower but became the kedge when I bought the big one.

Yeah , one of the real beauties of those anchors is that lump of steel will plunge to the bottom and hold even when the boat is under way .Andrew it's interesting to hear that the 15 pounder is considered suspect in your area too .I guess it would be best to say that the literature is over optimistic .They're such a fine piece of mass produced forging ,I may buy that Cutie and hang it on my wall! It could be the very anchor I did NOT buy for my brother !
