Anybody got one or have any experience with one? Any tips or advice? I'm currently getting one back into running condition and except for a couple of websites, information is sort of lacking. It currently resides in a Westerly. Thanks for all help.

I had a VIRE 12 in my old O'Day. It was the equivelent of an inboard British Seagull. If you run them regularly, they start easy, they never overhead, tons more torque than the hP would lead on. I used to pull start mine for fun sometimes. started right up.

every spring I had to scrap the ground connection, cause it corroded quickly, but If the made a 2 cylinder version (dolphin's is way to expensive!!!!) I'd have one in a second.

I loved that engine!!!!!!!!!!!

Hansen Marine is/was the only parts source in Noth America and they were very helpful.
They are somewhere in Mass. or Conn. IIRC.

I had my VIRE 12 which is the bigger brother of the VIRE 7 rebuild my Rock Channel Marine with parts from the factory in Demark.

There is also a UK VIRE Agent based in Dawset I think he is Nick the Engineer on eBay, he also offers advice.

Change the core plugs every year, they behave like sacrificial anodes.

Better to cool with a heat exchanger than raw sea water. The innerds are a mixture of steel, iron and aluminum.

I saw a couple of Vires yesterday - they would have been 7s at a guess. The guy I bought my "new" engine from showed me the brand new, 32 year old Vire that he is putting into the 16'er he is building. Absolutely factory fresh. Lovely.

I'm very happy with the 12 we've got in Talisman. A friend just asked me if I wanted a pair of Vires that a friend is selling. I might take a look. :)

On Ebay you will find "Nick the Engineer" that support these engines, he also both sells and re-manufactures parts that are not made any more. He also provides advice and expertises on the VIRE range. I use a combination of Nick and my local boat engineer.
