Have bleached my mahogany runabout and am about to stain with Interlux stain/filler. Did a test area and noticed that the planks (which have been replaced on occasion during the last 50 years) seem to have different porous levels and therefore
some are dark and others lighter. To the point that it is very noticable and not too attractive.

Is there anything available to treat the planks so that the stain is not so contrasting. Any info would be appreciated as I am a rookie to wooden boats.

We were at the house paint store a while ago getting house deck stain and noticed a gallon can labeled something like stain sealer. I asked if it was the same as Kilz. Nope said they is it a clear sealer used when the stain goes on blotchy. The sample sure made it look like it would do the job, as of course, it would.

It'll be monday now before I can get specifics but give the workd and I shall do so.

Paul,

I've used the "wood conditioners" and "stain sealers in the past with not much luck. Last go-around I used the Interlux stain and was not happy with the resuls.

I just did my mahogany cabin house with Minwax gel stain and am very happy with the results. It's the most even stain job I've ever done and the color is beautiful. It's intended for outdoor applictions under a UV resistant overcoat such as varnish or poly, so the pigment should be sun resistant.

Good luck with whatever choice you make!
