I thought I was in the right place so you have my apologies.
I bought a new RIDGID compound 12" sliding miter saw today, Modal MS1290LZ.
It will cut through 4x12 with ease, and the cut is so clean that it feels like glass.
It was next to many other brands but this saw is build like a tank compared to the others and $50 cheaper in cost, what a deal.!!
If your in the market for one I would look at this one before buying. Don't let the price scare you away, I think with care it will out live me, even if I make it another 20 years.

Well since were pluggin good tools
You blokes just HAVE to get the TRITON ROUTER!!! What a flamin machine!! smooth as silk start up handles that fit like the proverbial glove 1/4 and 1/2in collets standard goes both under table and free hand and is light and robust as all heck!
Only thing I dont like about it is the ruddy color!! Orange! Uggh Im up to the shed roof in orange tools here!
But for sheer perfection in a router the Triton is the one to get  oh and did I mention its Aussie? Weeeelll there you go its gotta be good if its Aussie made! ;)

Rigid tools do seem to be developing a good reputation. I tend to associate them with Home Depot and I have about as much faith in Home Depot's quality standards as I do in your average used car dealer's so I have been very hesitant to buy power tools and the like from them, but I may have to get over that.
It is too bad that this saw does not have more support on the sides for long pieces of wood. Yes, you can build something to provide that support, but especially on a job site that means one more thing to haul to and from the site. Two days ago I was cutting up 12' sticks of 1 1/2" maple bullnose moulding and I was glad for every bit of support I could get for those long pieces of wood.
I'll also say again what I have said before. If you actually need to regularly cut up large timbers then a 12" saw makes all sorts of sense. However, for general carpentry and the like I rarely find myself running out of capacity with a 10" sliding compound miter saw, and my back thanks for for the weight savings every time I have to move the saw around.

I have an Hitachi 10 inch slider myself, nice saw, but you're right to get over the Ridgid prejudice right away. :D They're doing a fine job, and in some cases (their plumbing tools for one) they lead the class.
I have several Ridge power tools, and although Home Depot (I have my own name for that outfit) is their main distributor, the value can be there; including the bandsaw.
Ridgid's was the cheapest of the Taiwanese 14 inch tools I looked at (really bought it to live in the boathouse) but within its class, I came to think it to be the best. The new $350 open base Delta is an embarrasement by comparison (buy that at Lowes smile.gif ) and the Jet is a 12" for more money and not any more impressive than the Delta. For more money there are better of course, but generally not, I think, for less. And, Ridgid parts, if needed, are downright cheap and ship fast. So it goes; you have to pick tool by tool, but my thought is that Ridgid is a legit contender notwithstanding the awkward choice of retailers.

I'm going to spend the day building a 12' left hand side bench and then I will build a 7' right hand side , of course perfectly level with the saw table.
This is a shop saw, for the home, not to be taken to a job site.

I bought a Rigid 6" ROS after reading about it here. Made in Germany by Metabo. Excellent tool.
