I'm heading to the Camp Pendleton area of Cal for a serious job offer sometime in late Sept. early Oct. I'm from Rhode Island and used to the East coast type boat yards. Anything special to check out on the left coast, wooden boat wise?

Don't think you'll find anything like Rhode Island.

Maybe Dave Fleming will chime in about what's available down San Diego way.

Wilmington is an interesting area. I used to drive parts for a yard in Orange County and would go up that way almost daily. When the sun goes down, it's best to leave  . A lot of it's pretty run down, you might just have to see for yourself. Taking Pacific Coast Highway back to where you'll be is an interesting drive.

There was a beautiful schooner called Kelpie in Dana Point available for charter, but I believe it's down in San Diego now too.

You'll be right by Oceanside, pretty small harbor. Entrance not to be tried during a big south swell (not that you will).

A cruise through Newport Harbor is a nice way to spend an afternoon.

Lots of boat stuff in Southern California, just not a whole lot of wooden boat stuff. Sorry, don't know what else to tell you.

Not much wooden boat action in SoCal; There is a small wood boat show in San Diego, you missed it by a few months you can check it out here, http://www.smallboatforum.com/PDFfiles/SanDiegoWoodenBoatFestival.pdf
The yard where they hold the show usually has at least a couple wood boats under repair.
In Dana Point we have Pilgrim a replica of the vessel R.H.Dana sailed on and the Spirit of Dana Point which are used for various civic and educational events.
The San Pedro/La Harbor area has The Maritime Museum http://www.lamaritimemuseum.org/ that is pretty nice. And of course there are hundreds of wood boats in the various harbors but you have to hunt them down.
Good Luck

A mate of mine is ripping the decks of Windhaven somewhere there I hear. If any know of progress there I'd like to hear.
