After my most recent visit to the small family lumberyard. In Charlotte NC, I am now searching for another supplier for my partially completed ADGB. It seems that the owner had a problem with me looking for usable stock, so much for friendly service.....
"With three generations of family now involved in a family-owned lumber supply business, two things have remained consistent throughout the years at (&%%)*%*)*)&; top quality lumber, and a unique level of dedication to customer service.
Whether you are looking to buy an entire truckload of lumber or just a couple of pieces of wood moulding, you can count on personal and friendly service from owners who want your return business."
Since I dont intend to ever return there, I sure could use some help in locating a decent supplier. I am in Rock Hill South Carolina.

How about Anchor Hardwoods in Wilmington? I drive up there and buy my lumber and sheetgoods. Tell them your taking it back to SC and they won't charge you tax.

If all else fails, and you can stomach truck freight from the west coast, go to the source. There are folks out there who will ship to you. Naturally, it depends on how much you need.
An unlikely source: Back around May 1 I saw a whole lift of doug-fir 4x4x8' for $1.25/BF at the local Home Depot. With careful culling, there was some decent lumber in that stack. It would have taken some resawing, but the wood was decent. From an Idaho mill. I saw similar 4x4s from the same mill in Tyler, TX. My guess is that every Home Depot around got one of these bundles.

And remember, there is a world of difference between kiln and air-dried fir. Air dried old growth is a wonderful wood. Cuts like butter with hand tools.
I have not purchased any good fir lately; I bought some Alaska yellow cedar for $7 to $8.50 a board foot. More expensive than walnut at some places.

In this Lumber Black Hole, we takes what we can gets.
Hey, after asking since forever if the local H.D.s had any douglas-fir and getting blank stares and "Wasssssssssssat" in return, finding an entire lift of 4x4s cheap enough to justify high grading, well I reckon it was a near miracle. Then to find that another H.D. 500 miles away and 3 months later had similar lumber, well that was a MIRACLE! There have been similar reports on the Forum. You have to go often. It does happen.

All the HDs around this part of the country sell only spf construction grade (at best) or and PT syp.
A few years ago I delivered an Austin Healey to a friend in California and bought a trailer load of rust free body parts to bring back to Ohio. I went to the local HD for some cheap boards to help secure the load. I thought that I had died and gone to heaven, Doug fir WAS their cheap wood! Nice clear wide boards, and for the price of pallet wood here. The sales person couldn't understand my excitement.
Then again what they call a corn field wouldn't qualify as a weed patch here in the midwest.

There is no CVG Doug Fir in most lumberyards in Southern California. You can get "clear" but not VG 2x6's but that's about it. Clear 4x4's disappeared about 8 years ago. I get rough-sawn, air-dried 2x6 CVG Doug Fir at a cabinetmakers lumberyard near the Anaheim/City of Orange line (junction of the 91 and the 57 freeways). I have been using it to build sash and panel doors, as the "clear" 2x stuff at the regular yards has a tendency to look like a boomarang after a while  Not good in a door or window. . .
You can get 1x clear at the local yards that is nice for trim, but the thick stuff is another matter. Full 4/4 CVG stair tread can be had, but it is very costly: over $7 a lf.

Bill, where are you finding good douglas fir in Atlanta? I donl;t need any now but that is always subject to change. Only place I have had any luck has been Randall Brothers.

Hey Groovy Mike, good to see you. smile.gif
Still have that beautiful little Chris Craft?
I know I'm a long way from SC but these guys will treat you right. Quality is their middle name. Most wooden boatbuilders and restorers up here buy from them. Best of luck on your search. ;)

I saw this little beauty at a local show recently and knew you'd appreciate it. ;)

Thanks Kevin, Yes I should probably be getting her cleaned up for the Charlotte NC show in a couple of weeks..especially since the Guideboat is on hold.
Well McEwen dont have....what I would want
I just wonder since there is one kind of big-box home improvement store just about everywhere and some have a few select pieces (not here) that some have been able to use. Seems that they could either stock or special order priemium lumber for not only boats but other high end woodworking projects. It seems to me they try to sell everything else!
I wonder if they have a suggestion box? we could all write at least one.

Maybe someone at the show will know a local source. The woodenboat nuts are usually good for that kind of info. Have fun. smile.gif

McEwen doesnt stock Doug Fir?
Since when?
GROOVY

The reply:
"What we stock is C&btr Douglas Fir which is S4
S. It is mixed grain. We do not select out for vertical grain."
Not to mention that I think they had a location in Charlotte and at that time only sold to contractors...
At this point of frustration I am either going to light it or use what I can get here......
