Here's what I remember:

The gentleman's name was Fred Rebell (an alias I think).

Boat's name was Elaine

Fred is mentioned in "Escape to the Sea" and "A Speck on the Sea".

Fred was a character. Somebody in Austrailia gave him and old leaky clinker one design. Fred repaired it best he could and set sail for California. He eventually reached California. Without papers or passport. He declared himself a "citizen of the world" and had a passport made up to prove it. I think he was eventually deported from the U.S. and sailed around the Pacific. That's where my memory gets fuzzy.

Oh, that muddy boots thing. Why didn't you say so. :D

DOH! Smacks his head hard! I knew I had read about Fred Rebell on the internet recently. In the files section of the microcruising Yahoo group. Y'all thought I had lost my mind.
