Sure looks like a whole lot of fun.
Just the thing for those who, so far, have failed to win a Darwin Award.
Worse, when they go missing or call for help, somebody has to go search and rescue, at tax payer's expense. That means you and me.

Be more than happy to reinburse you for the fraction of a cent of your taxes it would cost.
On the other hand, maybe the $.00002 (estimated) it costs is worth the chance to gripe about it? ;)
I was the unnoficial rescue craft for that race in the early 80's. Played soccer with a bunch of competitore in Tenerife and set up a radio Sched'. I was on a Vagabond 47.
I'd love to do the race, it would have to be a "proto" of course.
By the way; I would not be looking for rescue

I believe the rules state that you can only carry a VHF; so, help had better be within 30 miles or so. That seems like a fairly dumb rule.
I'd like to sail one across a Great Lake, the Atlantic I'll leave to others ;)

To all those so concerned about "tax payer's expense" , I can only suggest a short thinking about your "war on terror"....
I don't like the way that is going either.

The world would be a poorer place if it lacked boats like that - or the loonies who sail them.

That boat must be junk...
Look at the calm sea...that means NO WIND...
and the fool thing does that??
they deserve it...

Junk? I dunno, I think they're over-canvased, the mast is much taller than the boat is long. Looks more like "operator error" with the kite.
The purpose for the boats is single-handed racing across the Atlantic on 20-some-odd-foot long boats, which takes a special kind of mindfull purpose (insanity, skill, adventuresomeness???) Not for me to say ;) .
Many folks are adamant that single-handed long-distance sailling is poor seamansip by definition. In any event, after getting 3 or 4 hours of sleep a day for a couple weeks in 15-30 minute parcels, I can understand someone misjudging the spinnakar and crashing the boat.

BTW, looking at the photo, I'm not so sure he put her all the way over. It looks as if there's a small chance of still saving it (with plenty of luck).
