We were out placing a new geocache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=47806) on our lake just after Christmas, when we saw a scrap of lugsail in the distance. It turned out to be a lovely Shellback built by a local man out for it's maiden voyage.

Nice boat, nice pic. Could you tell what material the sail is sewn from? I stiched reef points in our store bought dacron sails, the sewing machine needle sounded like it was going through paper.

I didn’t ask about the sail. It looked to be professionally made, though. The boat was a joint project between him and his father. They started it at the WoodenBoat School this summer, finishing it up this fall.
New Dacron sails do have a membrane-like quality to them.

It's got to be 4 oz. Dacron (varies from about 3.8 oz. to about 4.2 oz. depending upon manufacturer). The construction isn't right for it to be anything like cotton, Tyvek, polytarp, etc.
Its a great photo, oughta be in the Launchings section of the WB Mag, or even on a cover
