View Full Version : One of these days..."Gray Seal"

Gray Seal, now that looks like a wooden boat!
One of these days I want to build it. (Well, alright, maybe the Wee Seal...).
But having read the 3-part presentation of the building of Gray Seal in the back issues of Wooden Boat, it is obviously a project for experienced builders.
So I'm thinking about a skiff or some such to learn on. Is there a double-ender, lapstrake that can be built with intermediate woodworking skills?
Anybody know about the Stickleback Dory, or the John Dory? Anybody built one?

Gee, your Grey Seal will need a dink...how 'bout the smallest Acorn?

Don O.'s Ness Yawl IS a beauty!
And your Whillyboat is no mud fence either, Greg!
I'm impressed.

Those two designs and the Calidonia Yawl are very similar to the Seals. I think it's just a question of scale.
I.O.'s book on construction is definatly worthwhile.

If I can do it, anyone can. ;)

Ordered I.O.'s book last night!

I fell hard for the Caledonia Yawl but decided on the Whilly Boat for a first time project because of size constraints. It is certainly testing my poor skills but so far so good.

Sweet Greg.

By the way, I noticed our pal Meerkat (Dave from Seattle) on The Caledonia Yawl & Voyage of The Aegre forum [URL=http://www.mavc2002.com/cyforum/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=9d29dcd348c932132c2d2280a38fe817]http://www.mavc2002.com/cyforum/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=9d29dcd348c932132c2d2280a38fe817[/ URL]
There is a LOT of relevant information on this site concerning Oughtred's Caledonia and related boats.

And... All about Ness Yawls, Ness Boats and Whilly Boats
