Looks good. What's the outwhale plan ? Morris had several options. Mine has mahogany rabbitted over the planking edge, with the rib tops exposed.

i am going to leave the rib tops exposed. on the original closed rail the inwale is notched for each rib a very daunting prospect to replace!

Very nice, Bob. It is clear you know how to work with your hands.

Very nice indeed.

Leaving the rib tops exposed leaves a little gap between the inwale and outwale that you can dump water out through. Otherwise a little bit always gets trapped.

Excellent. Old school.

Is that a thwart up in the end, or just something temporary?

Looks great. How are you going to finish it ? Varnish ... Glass ... Canvas ... Poly ... ? How did you decide on this design and where did you get the plans from ?

yes that is a thwart/carry handle. it will be canvassed and varnished. the plans were drawn from the lines of a 1905 b.n. morris model b. that i plan to restore. at this time the lines are only on posterboard as i wanted to "prove" them first. i am not trying to make this an exact duplicate. i do plan to go back and make a few minor changes to the form before building the second and better boat. here's the form:

Bob;
A fine looking job on both the form and the canoe. What changes are you planning for the mold?

Very nice. A very good design choice in my opinion. With the form, you have "built" two canoes and accomplished much.

Have you decided on a canvas filler formulation yet Bob?

earl,i'm either going to shorten the stem profile to reduce the number of cant ribs i needed to install or add a place for a couple of more bands in the ends if i can. this was my first form and in trying to learn how to do it i should have extended the form a ways further toward the ends.
abe, no i haven't, if you've got a receipe for one i'd love to hear it. there are commercial products out there but.....$$$$$$$
there is some discussion that i may have brought too many plank ends together on one rib and will have to change that on the next canoe. it just seemed to work out that way with the gores this time. i may try to line out the plank patterns differently next time.

Didn't you say that you had another Morris in the mix ? How's it planked. Here's the planking plan on mine. The plank below the first tapered plank is full length and uniform width. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid19/p7c59629e6b4033ca26d05b71b0adbbab/fdc38498.jpg

Wow, Bob!

Looks great! You work fast! I don't remember seeing that around when I visited your shop last summer.

BTW, I'm still sorry about the dog getting sick in your garden (not as sorry as he was, though!).

I took another look at the old Morris planking plan. That first tapered plank in the picture is actually full length. The one above it, also tapered, is the first one with a joint. That joint is actually three planks. The tapered part meets the ends of two side planks. The plank above all that is joined one rib forward and continues to the stem, with a scallop at the sheer. Some of this is called "gores", but I'm not sure how to use the terms.

The point of all this is the Old Man Morris apparently disobeyed the three-rib rule. The wisdom in his plan is that he tapered the planks so that there are no planks running off the sheer until the filler pieces at the high peaks. All evidence is that his plan was plenty sound.
