Periodically I see Russian sextants on
e-Bay which claim to be high quality and originally used by the Soviet navy. Has anyone had any experience with these?

I had a couple of them in my hand as well as some old East-German ones. Just by looking at them they looked ok.
One dealer said that he had them surveyed by an official German public agency and they found no major problems.

I've got some Russian binoculars which are brilliant and only thirty quid NEW.
Can't be bad ;)

Russian optics has generally had a pretty good reputation though the design is usually of a more nostalgic character, or would that be retro, in which case it's fashionable smile.gif

True - I own a russian 6x6 camera (Kiev 88) which is pretty close to a 3000 Dollar Hasselblatt (with "East-German" Zeiss lenses) and I use russian self-winding waterproofed officers-watch which are really good (I heard that Russia bought equipement in Swiss to manufacture those).

We have an East German one that is very good. I would imagine that if the sextant is in good working order that there would be no major problems. The Soviet Navy usually knew where it was.
On the other hand I seem to remember a lot of Russian trawlers that got lost near our coast many years ago. Come to think of it one or two of our ships got lost too. Maybe it has to do more with all that trig involved. ;)
Our Navy has been known to get lost too. The Brits nearly let the Bismark get away from them because of a big navigation error.
