From the North Haven News, North Haven, Maine:
"The 65' black-hulled ketch Elda from Hamburg, Germany, owned by Dagmar Loew of Montreal, [was lost on] Medric Rock. This hazard off Vinalhaven lies west of Lairey's and Spectacle islands and to the northwest of the White islands. . .
Elda grounded in mid-December just past high water on an outgoing tide. She haad been berthed for the winter at Wayfarer Marine in Camden's inner harbor, but because the harbor was being dredged she was among the many boats moved onto moorings in the outer harbor during that operation. She broke loose during a strong blow from the north-northwest, which carried her out past Curtis island and down Penobscot Bay. She skirted any number of ledges, and had she traveled less than half a mile to her westward, she'd have cleared everything. . . Instead she grounded hard on Medric, and though heavily built, was terminally damaged.
Foy Brown responded to a request from Wayfarer to go check Elda's condition. . . he set Adam Campbell ashore on the lee side of Medric, from where Adam was able to approach the boat and confirm that it was lost. Four foot timbers were drifting around inside her and her hull was irreparably damaged - a diver later reported that her keel was broken. A Prock marine tug and a Coast Guard vessel were stading by, but an attempt to use styrofoam to float her was unsuccessful. Days later she washed off Medric and sank in deeper waters."
