Get a good stainless martini shaker, one that will FROST over, fill with ice, poor in quality bourbon (currently using Woodford Reserve, I still have friends rich enough to care about me :D ) Poor in a bit o sweet vermouth and my personally touch a little cherry juice. Shake the **** out of it, then shake some more. Poor into a chilled martini glass with a cherry in it. The key to know if you did it correct there should be tiny ice crystals on the surface. Ahhhhhhh it help's you forget you just worked in a restaurant all night and lost your swimming pond today. Oh and please don't give me the AA crap its just one perfect Manhattan.

Not being an imbiber of the hard stuff I gotta ask, How did the **** get in there in the first place and what, otherwise, is the purpose of all that shaking?

Norm, I think it's to shake away the evil spirits to make room for the good ones.

Joe what you need is a good Southern drink and no I ain't talking about Jack & Coke (although that ain't to bad).

My favorite drink is Southern & 7 with a twist of lemon. You mix some Southern Comfort and Seven-Up (ratio depending on how strong you want it). The most important part about this drink is the twist of lemon. Southern Comfort can be kinda sweet and the lemon cuts down on the sweetness.

It would be even more perfect if the New York native could spell manhattan. Now don't get all defensive Joe. Just pulling your chain.

Probably why I am in AAI found the solution by removing the cherry, then the vermouth,,after that it's good in any glass that doesn't have fruit flies on it. Now I've got the fruit flies and no bourbon. Maybe if I put the vermouth , cherry back it I'll be 34 again.

Don't forget a dash or two of angostura. The bitters add a nice layer of complexity.

My favorite variation is to use a good Canadian whiskey instead of bourbon. Try Crown Royal or CC.

Enjoy slowly of a hot summer evening.

Sapphire martini, straight up, with three olives. (If you order it with three olives, it's considered a salad.)

midwest manhattan

Here in the land of brandy drinkers (Wisconsin has the largest per capita consumption of brandy of anywhere in the world) the brandy manhattan is king.

The "perfect" manhattan requires just a small amount of both sweet and dry vermouth, the bitters and topped with a couple of olives.

Can't waste time with the shaking joe. just pour, stir and enjoy
