Well, I went to the NJ DMV today to apply for a hull number for Floozie. I had in my hot little hand a certificate from the NJ State Police (nice guys by the way)who came to inspect the boat and certify that it is indeed home built. Yippee! I was going to make Floozie offical. Little did I know that I'm not even close to getting the hull number. First I need 4 pictures of the boat, (fore, aft, port and starboard) which will be impossible to take because the boat's still in the garage and I can't get far enough away to get a shot. Then I need to submit a written and notarized construction plan as well as the receipts for the materials used in construction. At least Michelle, the DMV lady, was very nice and helpful, but it looks as if I'm still a few weeks away from getting Floozie's hull ID number......  ..Phil

Sorry to hear of your exploits, Phil. When I registered mine in Florida, I was lucky to have a DMV clerk who knew nothing and her supervisor knew even less. This resulted in them winging the procedure and blowing off a couple of things I should have shown them (like receipts showing sales tax was paid). An oxymoron for all times: "easy DMV registration!"
Here's an idea, take the best 4 pics you can while in the gargage and bring the rest of your building photo album with you. They would be hard pressed to not see that it was indeed home-built.
Good luck,
Jeff

For what it's worth; when I registered a homemade boat in Ohio in the 70's, I told them (and it was the truth) that it was made in the 50's by my dad and I and that Michigan did not require homemade boats under 16' to be registered (no power). It is now registered as an HH (historical) boat in Ohio and never has to be registered again. Not bad for $25.00

Take your receipts to the Wood County Tax Assesors office in Hawkins, TX. Sara is there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tell Sara that Wayne with the wooden boat sent you. Bring a pencil rubbing of the hull ID number. The one you made up yourself and engraved on the hull. It'll take awhile but you'll get registration numbers. Big Grin!

They said the bill of sale was not going to be enough; I said "why not?" For which, try as they might, they didn't have an answer. Are that many stolen boats out there? Not 13 foot sailboats anyway. It cost me $150 for a permanent tag for the trailer, 9 bucks for the boat for 3 years. I gotta' get my sons a backpack to carry her with!

Video I feel your pain. I got the shock of the year when I tried to title my boat recently. Inspection and the guys at the Div. of Watercraft were great. The title office was just scary. First they couldn't believe I built the thing (not common here I guess). Confusion, phone calls... Then they want all the receipts. I had no idea. My bad maybe but no one else seemed to know of it either. It was bad. Short story is I got some help from a friend in the boat biz and his friend in another title office. Yikes. One more thing I've learned I guess. Carry on. Dan.

Bad luck! There were no such demands made at the Flemington agency last Spring.
Insurance for a non-manufactured boat was the hassle. Even an umbrella policy requires "underlying coverage" for liability, not to mention the boat's value. BoatUS was more decent than the rest of the lot.

Hmmm.... The DMV is a real pain in the ass here in NJ, this is the first I heard of having to take photo's and a notorized construction plan.
Its not unusual to get different info from different DMV agencys in NJ, due to the fact that the DMV agencys are privately run, not state run. I use the State Police Marine inspection unit in Burlington NJ (also nice guys) and the DMV agency in Haddon Heights NJ for registration and titling, they are by far the most user friendly of the agencys in my neck of the woods. I wonder what the proceedure is for getting a title for an old salvaged boat?

Show the nice lady behind the desk a shot of the boat's name on the transom, which coincidentally is the same as hers, and things will go smoothly from then on!!

Too bad you're not in GA. Here you send in your $36 and they send you a HIN and tell you what numbers to put on the bow.
Am I the only one that thinks "Floozie" is a great name for a boat? smile.gif

Johh, unfortunately times have changed here in Georgia. Now you have to get your boat inspected and get a hull number before you can get your registration. Even for homebuilts that have been previously registered if the boat was built after a certain date (1974 I think) you have to have it inspected before you can renew your registration.

Since when? It was pretty simple two or three years ago, the last time I did it.

It must be pretty recent. A friend was renewing his registration on a homebuilt and ran into this. If you check out the info on the DNR website (www.gadnr.org) they go through it. Anything built after 1972 requireds them issuing a hull ID. It is still a pretty easy thing, but it does require your having a ranger inspect your boat.
I actually work for DNR and was unaware of this. It is mainly beacuse of so many stolen boats getting new registrations with fake ID numbers. Apparently it is a bigger problem than is generally known about. The good news is that since I do work for DNR I have some pretty good contacts with the rangers and can probably help anyone in Georgia who has a problem.
