Opens a new browser page. Good for checking out other sites without losing your place in the forum. Switch between them with Alt/Tab.

Here's a bunch of keyboard shortcuts for those of you lucky enough to have a Windows key on your keyboard. Note, these don't all work in every version of Windows.

Windows: Display Start menu.
Windows + D: Minimize or restore all Windows.
Windows + E: Display Windows Explorer.
Windows + Tab: Cycle through buttons on taskbar.
Windows + F: Display find: all files.
Windows + Ctrl + F: Display find: computer.
Windows + F1: Display Help.
Windows + R: Display Run command.
Windows + break: Display system properties dialog box.
Windows + shift + M: Undo minimize all windows.

F11 - changes the screen layout to give you a larger browser window.

Right, I prefer alt-spacebar-x. Gives you more info, esp. when waiting for a screen to load.

Another one: F4 to go to the address bar, type the site name only, e.g. "woodenboat", Control-Enter will add http://www. and .com. Got some of these from reading the "tips" on IE 5.5. That's what I like about Windows, there are all kinds of little tricks you can use if you take the time to find them. Don't really need a mouse.

I also use the shortcut key - very handy. Only takes a second to set up in "Properties" on the Desktop or Start Menu. I set Outlook up as Control-Alt-M, for example. They'll put that on my grave: "He found all the windows shortcuts."

Microsoft doesn't even know about all the windows shortcuts.

Sometimes when you're searching and browsing around you find a page with several links you want to check out. You click a link and follow a new train of thought - and eventually lose the page from which you started.

If you right-click on a link, it'll let you open that link in a new browser window. You can surf to your heart's content, and still have your original window intact to continue your e-travels.

I used to have an advisor at school and he told me that all a mouse did was slow down productivity.

I looked at your profile Jeff, you do reenacting? Always thought that looked like fun - expensive hobby though if you get into it. Guy near me has assumed the identity of a German colonel who fought for the Confederacy and lost an arm at Shiloh, I think. For the rest of his life he flew the Confederate flag at his home in Bavaria.

My sympathy for your connection speed, I'm spoiled up here. You might consider DirecPC or whatever they call it now, a satellite dish on your roof. I used it for three years, it's a little fussy but better than what you got, and not too expensive.

ctrl-shift-f4 is a fun key combination too ;)

My thread, wandering around just like me! There was a lot of revolutionary war activity in this area. Just curious.

ctrl-shift-F4 has different behaviors in different software. Not at all similar behaviors.

ctrl-shift-f4 is/was a standard windows key binding.

Another tip: if you right click on the task bar, you can bring up a menu that allows you to tile windows or cascade on the desktop or minimize them all or unminimize them all, plus other stuff.

Yeah Chad - Keyboards rule, mouses drool ;)

Similar to Windows+tab, Alt+tab will bring up a box mid screen showing all windows open. Keep holding Alt down and tab from application to application or web page to web page. When you're where you wants to be, release Alt.

Also Windows followed by "p" opens your programs list and the first letter of a program name followed by enter will take you to that program.

Thus:
Windows, p, i, enter opens Internet Explorer;

Windows, p, q, enter opens Quicken, Quick Books, etc.;

Windows, p, m, enter opens Microsoft Excel;

If you have more than one Microsoft program (ha):

Windows, p, m, m, enter opens Microsoft Outlook;

Windows p, m, m, m, enter opens Microsoft Word

If you have more Microsoft programs, just add more "m"'s. It's an alphabetical thing.

Hey Joe, what do you use for a Windows key tongue.gif

Oh, I know, a fruit! (Just thought I'd beat Donn to it :D )

Have fun guys!

- Margo

If you hit ctrl-shift-F4, while in a WordPerfect document, you close the file without saving it.

It's also convenient to revise a post by copying it over to a text editor, making the revisions, then copying it back.

OK folks laugh if you wish.
Do you mean Alt / Tab together, using the slash?
WHAT IS TAB?
I am very embarrassed.
Rex. :confused: :confused:

Rex. :confused: :confused: TAB is that key, often above the "Caps Lock" key on the far left side of your keyboard, that causes the cursor on the screen to jump so many spaces to the right when you press it. Sometimes it will have nothing but left and right arrows on it, with the left arrow representing the "back tab" function that may occur (depending on the software) when shift-TAB is pressed (holding down the shift key and pressing the TAB key at the same time).

ALT-TAB would mean holding down the ALT key and then pressing the TAB key.

Another good tip is to dump IE all together and switch to Opera.

Years ago, I killed off the "Standard Buttons" at the top of the IE window and I use the keyboard instead.

F5 = Refresh
Ctrl-C = Copy
Ctrl-X = Cut
Ctrl-V = Insert
Alt-(Left Arrow) = Back
Alt-(Right Arrow) = Forward
Esc = Stop
