Lookin' pretty good, Bob. Are you going to be able to get it into the water this season?

Frank, I am shooting to paint the hull this coming week, let it sit a week, and flip it back over. The inside is mostly done, and I have to put some bits and pieces back on. All and all, I am shooting at having it in the water around the middle of August. Wish me luck, (I'll need it)
yes...Toffee (Sir Kaschak Heath Bar Crunch)has a personality like a teenage best friend, a bit querky, you can say or do anything around him and he doesn't laugh at you, and loyal as all hell.

Looks real nice. You must have really worked to get all the paint out of the grain of that plywood like you did, not a fun job. Just keep pluggin at it & she will be wet before you know it. :D

Tom, I think the last paint job was by Helen Keller with a Ray Charles assist.

Very Nice Pictures. What Kind of Boat is it? How big? How old? What Kind of fasteners?Did you use a heatgun to strip all that paint off or chemicals? Looks like a great project Bob.

Kevin, I have no idea on what kind of boat it is, and I really wish I knew. It is not a Bluejay or Lightning. I bought it from a guy in upstate NY, who bought it from someone in Long Island NY back in the 40's or 50's. He said "it was made in the Long Island area in 1928". It has a 71 sq ft sail made by Ratsy and Lapthorn with a date of 4/11/33, so I am to assume that the boat might be at least that old. It is 12 ft long, is plywood on oak and mahogany. The centerboard is 1/4" brass plate. All of the rigging is in good shape. I replaced a few frames, and stripped the hull with a chemical stripper (Dad's Easy Spray). It took about 5-7 layers of stripper in each section, because there was so much paint on it. I have included a link to some previous photos showing what the boat looked like when I first got it, and how the inside looks now.

Bob.......What an interesting boat. I'll bet she has an interesting history too. You were very lucky to find her with all the rigging complete. Was the deck canvased? Can't wait to see pictures of her in the water.

Kevin, the deck was just painted plywood. I would like to replace it with something a little nicer than that in the future. For this year, I will just put a plywood deck back on it so I could get it in the water. I bought it last August, and have yet to sail her. I worked on it on and off over the last year. So far I have about 130 hours and about $150 into it. I originally paid $200 for it with trailer and all.

Here is the color so far. It will also have a cream stripe with charcoal accents.

I see you're at the fun part of restoration. Sure wish I could find something like this---> http://www.clinkerbuilt.com/15_cat.html
These Lyman Cat Boats are from the same time line as your boat, they're about the same size ,but different construction(lapstrake). They have quite a history on Lake Erie and are rare. Notice the canvas deck.Guess I'll just have to keep checking those old barns around here. :D Nice paint job smile.gif

Bob.....I just noticed that you're from the Lake Champlain area. Is there any chance you might know of a source of information on the Lake Champlain Patrol Boats like this one being restored by Gary Baker of the ACBS?---> http://acbs.org/ClearLake/Safe-Harbour/
Gary is trying to identify the builder.

Kevin, I personally know nothing about them, but here is a link to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Burlington VT. They might be able to help. By the way, thanks for the link to the Lymans. They are one of the few boats I have seen with a similar "squared-off" cockpit in the front like mine. Most seem to have a curve, or at least rounded corners leading to the deck, or no deck at all, just a mast step.
Best Regards,
