Andy Rooney says: They call my President a "COWBOY!"

It used to tick me off when the Muslim detractors in the Middle East,
or the
Socialist detractors in Europe, Hollywood and other cesspools of
America
called my President a cowboy, but the more I think about it, the more
glad I
am that he is.

When I was a kid, cowboys were my heroes. Well, I mean the ones in the
white
hats; the black hats were the bad guys. There was Tom Mix, Buck Jones,
Johnny Jack Brown, Hopalong Cassidy, Red Ryder, Gary Cooper, Roy
Rogers,
Marshal Matt Dillon, and others. Personally, I think Roy Rogers could
beat
em all up, and then sing a song afterward to his girl friend. He was my
favorite.

What were common attributes of these legendary cowboys? Here are a few:

1. They were never looking for trouble, but when it came, they faced it
with
courage.
2. They were always on the side of right.
3. They defended good people against bad people.
4. They had high morals.
5. They had good manners.
6. They were honest.
7. They spoke their minds and spoke the truth, regardless of what
people
thought or "political correctness," which no one had ever heard of back
then.
8. They were a beacon of integrity in the wild, wild West.
9. They were respected. When they walked into a saloon where they
usually
drank only sarsaparilla, the place became quiet, and the bad guys kept
their
distance.
10. If in a gunfight, they could outdraw anyone. If in a fist fight,
they
could beat up anyone.
11. They always won.
12. They always got their man.
13. In victory, they rode off into the sunset.

Those were the days when there was such a thing as right and wrong,
something now blurred in our modern world, and denied by many. Those
were
the days when women were respected and treated as ladies, because they
acted

like ladies.

Now as I am older, I still like cowboys. They represent something good
--
something pure that America has been missing.

Ronald Reagan was a cowboy. I like Ronald Reagan, who was brave,
positive,
and who gave us hope. He wore a white hat. To the consternation of his
liberal critics, he had the courage to call a spade a spade and call
the
former Soviet Union what it was -- the evil empire. Liberals hated
Ronald
Reagan.

They also hate President Bush because he distinguishes between good and
evil.He calls a spade a spade, and after 9-11 called evil "evil"
without
mincing any words, to the shock of the liberal establishment. That's
what
cowboys do you know.

He also told the French to "put their cards on the table" (old West
talk),which they did, exposing their cowardness and greed.

The Arabs are wrong. In the old West, might did not make right. Right
made
right. Cowboys in white hats were always on the side of right, and that
was
their might.

I am glad my President is a cowboy. He will get his man. Cowboys always
do,
you know.

Most of the cowboy myth is a hollywood construct, or from literary works by liberal minded creative types.

Everybody likes a cowboy :D

I wouldn't badmouth a cowboy ;) .
I just don't see it as any differnt than aspiring to model ones behavior on any achetypical mythical figure. It could be Popeye, Capt. Aubry, Superman or Mr. Natural. I like Capt.Picard, myself..

Not real, but they serve a funtion in society.

I liked Zorro. Rocky and BullWinkle. But aint nothing says "take care of me" like a big strong man in leather chaps singing YMCA!!
oops,,too many images. What's the topic? oh right, reality. Hey, wasn't Hans Solo a cowboy? you know,,NOT a corporate guy,,out on the range,,doing what had to be done on a situational ethics kind of situation,,,where no one will find the body and you only got your conscience to deal with,,,until you get back to the ranch and the woman of the house cooks up meal for the hands,,,"YMCA!!" damn out of here,,,
far from the constraints of the law and society,,where a man was a man and there was no need for book learnin 'cept the good book and an occasional visit to the saloon. "YMCA"....we're not in Kansas anymore Toto"
Oh home on the range,,,yeeehaaa!
engage you Wookies. I'm comin for you queen Carrie.

Both Gene Autry (whose family were early Texas settlors) and Will Rogers (who was part Indian) were genuine cowboys in their youth.

So there is some reality along with the myth.

My paternal grandfather's father and his family were early settlors in Idaho, and the virtues they believed in were the taciturn and straight-shooting cowboy virtues. My grandfather and his brothers were guys you'd want with you in a tight spot. They didn't say much, but they were honest, hard-working, with many practical skills, and got the job done. And modest, too, with great senses of humor. That was all part of the West in which they were reared...

@SONG: Back from the Shadows, again
-------------------------------------------------
(Sung to the tune of "Back in the Saddle, again")

The Whisperin' Squash[singing]:

Back from the Shadows again !
Out where an In-jun's your friend!
Where the veg'tables are green,
And you can pee into the stream!
Yes, we're back from the Shadows again!

Reprise (Whisperin' with others):
We're goin' back to the Shadows again !
Out where an Indian's your friend!
Where the vegetables are green,
And you can pee right into the stream!
(And that's important!)
We're back from the Shadows again!

yes Alan there are virtues attributed to different lifestyles,,,and vices. Unconcerned with social constraints, going it alone, uncommunicative, able to leave a sticky situation as you gotta get to the next opportunity. "Did you hear the one about the farmers daughter.." Cowboys entering into territory with undefined boundaries. Cowboys really don't have power. Corporate presidents appointed by board members of large corporations do. Long live the board.

LeeG

Greg, horse (stable) smell is right up there with wooden boat smell and old sports car smell as one of my favorites.

Particularly when the stable uses sawdust for bedding.

Woodshop smell can be good, too. :D

Not Me Bruce G, I smell like pond water at the moment ;)

I'll agree with all of those Allan, except the stable smell and chicken coops, cows, gardenias.

It's been said that women have a particular fondness for "horse smell", though.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO RANDOLPH SCOTT?
Recorded by The Statler Brothers
Written by Don Reid and Harold Reid

[G] Everbody knows when you [G7] go to the show
You [C] can't take the kids a-[G] long
You've gotta read the paper and know the code
of [A7] G, PG and R [D] and X
You [G] gotta know what the [G7] movie's about
Be-[C] fore you even [G] go
Tex [C] Ritter's gone and [G] Disney's [E7] dead
The [A7] screen is [D] filled with [G] sex.

CHORUS
[G] Whatever happened to [B7] Randolph Scott
[C] ridin' the range a-[G] lone
Whatever happened to Gene and Tex
And [A7] Roy and Rex, the Du-[D]ran-go Kid
[G] Whatever happened to [B7] Randolph Scott
His [C] horse, plain as can be [G]
[C] Whatever happened to [G] Randolph [E7] Scott
Has [A7] happened to the [D] best of [G] me.

Everbody's tryin' to make a comment
About our doubts and fears
True Grit's the only movie
I've really understood in years
You gotta take your analyst along
To see if it's fit to see
Whatever happened to Randolph Scott
Has happened to the best of me.

CHORUS

Whatever happened to Johnny Mack Brown
And Alan "Rocky" Lane
Whatever happened to Lash LaRue
I'd love to see them again
Whatever happened to Smiley Burnett
Tim Holt and Gene Autry
Whatever happened to all of these
Has happened to the best of me.

REPEAT LAST TWO LINES.
