What is the best putty to use for filling screw holes and other small dents before painting.

Should I use a caulk at the seams of a lapstake hull before painting.

The old putty was chalk dust mixed with linseed oil into a suitably thick paste. Some, I have been told, added white lead to the mixture, but I don't have the formula. Turpentine was used to thin it.

There's a book by William Robinson called Sailing the Great Southern Ocean (that title may be a word or two off) that, IIRC, has some of his formulas in it.

Don Danenberg swears by Famowood...

I was going to ask that same question this week - what IS a good filler to use over old paint that is sticking well?
I did all my intial filling with epoxy filler, but now down to the nitty gritty on areas already painted.
As far as caulk along the lapstrake, i guess it depends on the boat, but i put a bead under each strake and smoothed it out on my Trojan skiff and it looks great. now if i could only end this 'prepping' process....
