View Full Version : 1 or 2 layers of Owatrol?

Hi there,
It's the first time I post here so apologies if the group is wrong.
My question: Previous owner has treated the mahogany deck structures with Owatrol. The label on Owatrol 2 requires two layers each spring. Already one layer seemed to give a nice result. Being unfamiliar with the stuff I ask if anybody has experience on using just one layer. Is it sufficient?
(In Finland the spring is veryvery early and I would like to get the boat to the water ASAP.)

I have to confess, I've never heard of Owatrol. But, if you want to get her in the water, go for it! You can always finish the deckworks later. No?

One coat should be fine but better still if you overcoat with a good traditional varnish like Epifanes.

Hi
AFAIK the Owatrol = Deks Olje

(ha, my boat is in water, mast is up; perhaps getting a sail in a few days...)

Owatrol is a paint wetting agent. Great stuff.
Add a little to gloss or varnish and you keep your wet edge longer.
To answer the post - one perfect coat is ok but two coats will allow for human imperfections - ie. the missed bits.
It also is a very good primer for steel/iron/galvanised and is thin enough to 'soak' into metal a bit.
Deks Ole is great too. I didn't know it was the same stuff as Owetrol. Is it? Does tung oil come into the same group as well?

Do you think Owatrol can be coated with a varnish?? After all, it's supposed to be an oil..

It sounds as if Owatrol is sold in the States under the name Penatrol. Anyone know if that's the case?

Hi!
I use Owatrol D1 and D2. The D1 is used to thoroughly penetrate the wood. The D2 gives a
protective layer on top just like varnish.
Properly applied (that means following the label) the result is excellent. Two layers is better than one layer. I apply 4 - 6 on mast, doors etc.
As someone mentioned; Owatrol manufactures various
oils, also one that can be mixed into various
paintings to avoid cracking up when under tension.
This oil I've also used with success as a primer on iron/steel. As a general rule: shortcuts seldom pay off when the subject is painting/oiling/varnishing your boat.

That's interesting Pelle, D1 and D2 are Deks Olje in the UK - and excellent stuff for brightwork it is too. It takes knocks better than traditional varnish and much easier to re-coat. I just soak the wood with D1 till it will not take any more for a matt finish and a couple of coats of D2 for a gloss finish.
Owatrol is distributed in the UK from a firm just down the road from me and I didn't know they made other finishes.
