I'll be flying back from Finland in July and will spend a night and most of a day in Iceland. I'd like to make it as interesting as possible and not stay in a generic hotel. Any ideas on neat things to do or places to stay? Low cost/No cost ideas are welcomed....helicoptor tours are out...

One day isn't much. It's a fascinating city, country, harbour, etc. Walking around downtown is neat--although this is a cold time of the year. There is a natural, warm spa where the locals hang out. The night life is great. The glaciers fantastic. Even the powerplants are interesting. The countryside in the summer is terrific hiking, etc. etc. Then there are the mothballed whalers in the harbour, the volcanoes.....

depending on the weather.....take a trip to keflavic....and watch the landscape......the worlds largest lava flow...don't get out of the car...people walk a few feet off the road and disappear not to be found for 500 years....the ocean actually undercuts the lava flow inland for a great distance....
Hire a light plane to take you out across to Vatnjojull..the volcano is under the ice...every few years the water and steam build up and causes the glacier to lift a few feet and a tidal wave comes out and destroys the road to Hofn...the national lottery is based on the actual time this occurs...
Don't eat the Ice Cream at the local dairy Queen...it is 100% full cream ice cream and you'll gain a few pounds with one sundae..
Booze is expensive in Iceland..everyone has a few drinks of grain alcohol and juice before going out...to get in the mood...and will nurse a drink
all night long at the club...if you go to a club and alady grabs your arm...she will try to take you home..you'll never make it to your hotel room...
Forget the trip to Keflavik..the airport is there and you will cross the lava flow on your way to Reyjkvic....
If you have time take a day trip to Thingveller (Thing Vetlur) the place of modern law and courts, burial place of the viking law givers, althing and the place where eric the Red was judged and banished..
If you have time...visit the national museum and look at the Viking ship displays and artwork. "Kalli" was the way I signed my work..
and you ain't got enough time.
