So why go sailing Memorial Day weekend when you can tear your boat apart??

Turns out it was a good idea -- dampish under there. The Irish felt is fine. on top of fore and aft 1/2" teak, on top of about 5/8" diagonal fir (very nice touch from below).
I've looked at the 2000 and 2001 threads on the subject, as well as Ed McClave's WB75 article; very useful all, but one point of ambiguity remains. If you use white lead, you coat the felt with it and bed the canvas in the still wet lead? Sounds right to me, as the rot prevention is important. Mc Clave doesn't mention felt underlayment, but everything else he says sounds pretty straightforward.
