    Vilhjalmur Stefansson

Speaking of arctic explorers, here's another mostly forgotten name, still controversial among those with whom it is familiar. A screenwriter by the name of Niven has written several recent books detracting from his character and abilities, some say wrongly.

    Any thoughts on this???

Here's a link to a site on him:

That does seem to be the trend. It is easier to tear down than to build, as John Adams was fond of saying.

Thanks for the link. I'll enjoy reading up.

Read " KARLUCK". It was written from the diaries of a memeber of his expedition. V.S.is not a hero, just an self promoting adventurer, an anti-Shakelton.
The real heroes are Capt. Bob Barlett and the eskimo women who sewed clothes an goggles for the crew from seal and walrus skins. Barlett led the crew across the ice to Wrangell Island and then made an open boat journey to Nome to find a rescue vessel, the King & Winge. Barlett knew that the crew would not survive the winter. He averted a modern Franklin Expedition.
By the time the script doctors and junior executives get through with the story it will be unrecognisable drivel.
