(TV5) Bay City-- It's a treasure hunter's dream come true. A once in a lifetime opportunity, and it's right here in Mid-Michigan. A hardware store that closed its doors in 1955 remains as it was almost fifty years ago, with everything still on the shelves.
Zielinski Hardware has escaped time for the last five decades, until now. The business closed in 1955, but they never liquidated the stock, they simply closed the doors and never reopened.
Greg Armstrong says it took years to convince the heirs of the late owner to let him in the store, let alone sell off the stores time hidden wares.
"When we walked in here it was truely overwhelming. There was a lot of stuff and we had no idea what would be in here. We found advertising packages still unopened in the boxes. Tools with no rust. We opened the boxes and the tools were bright and shiny, like they just came from the supplier, Armstrong said.
There hasn't been a paying customer at Zielinski's since 1955, but on April 14th the doors will reopen and everything in the store will be for sale. You can find Zielinski's Hardware store on the corner of Michigan and Cass across the street from St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Bay City. Doors open at 9:00am and Armstrong says that there will not be any early sales.
