I need advice on what to use for a durable deck PAINT on the cedar planked cockpit deck on my lobster boat. It has been previously painted white primer, grey overcoat. The decks are not bright finished and are not teak. I have removed the seam compound and plan to fill the caulked seams with SikaFlex and then 2 coats of paint.
Any suggestions on a brand - marine or non-marine (Benjamin Moore industrial grade paint tinted a nice blue/grey for instance).
Thanks, Joe

Call George Kirby at the Kirby Paint Company, New Bedford, 508 997-9008. His paints are extremely durable and easy to apply. He has great colors, too.

We have always had great results from International Interdeck. We have this on thedecks and the cockit sole - anti-slip, wears well, takes one coat a year to keep it in shape wherever you tread a lot. Just a wash down elsewhere is fine.

Interestingly, I've been spending a week doing a lot of head-bangning while trying to cover the inside of bulwarks with Ben Moore industrial paint. A bit like trying to paint with pudding, and transparent pudding at that. Three coats so far, and the primer still shows through clearly. This may be a problem with the fact that it's red and custom-tinted... We've tried several different shades and none of them have worked. In a different part of the boat, we used a generic-brand red porch paint from the local hardware store, and that was great. Went on smooth, good brush 'feel' and covered in one coat. If it wasn't for the owner wanting a particular shade of red (not, of course, the one that the porch paint comes in), I would use that everywhere. Good ol' Pete Culler was right... House paint works just fine for wooden boats, if you're not too finicky about the perfect gloss.
