Hi people,

I could use some advice here. In my continuing quest to get my Vindo 38 (Tucana) in good shape I've removed that chain plates to fix the leaks that were comming in around them.

The deck is solid fiberglass clad in 1/2" teak strip decking. There is an eschutcian plate for each chaing plate that screws down on to the deck.

I've been advised by two boatyards to use black 5200 to bed the plates back in with. I'd like to hear some other oppinions as to what is the best bedding/caulking material. Is 5200 the right stuff? I'm affraid if I have to take them back out I'll be out of luck in the future.

Any thoughts?

Joe

Strictly speaking, 3M-5200 is a marine adhesive. Bedding your chainplates in the stuff will probably work but you're right about it being PERMANENT. There won't be any future removal of those chainplates without repair of the deck to go along with it.

There are plenty of bedding compounds out there that will work well and still give you the option of someday being able to disassemble.....

Sikaflex 291 or 3m 4200 :D
3m 4200 is softer than 5200 & can be removed alot easier. It worked really well for my window frames when i put them back in my wheelhouse after painting, thanks to the chemist ;) .

The new issue of WoodenBoat (#172) has an article on different types of bedding compounds.

Joe,
Would you please post some pics of your boat? I'm wearing out the pages of Ferenc Mate's book "The World's Best Sailboats." Particularly those on Vindo Sweden. I hope to duplicate the cockpit, turtle hatch cover and cowl on my boat as I restore her. Fantastic boats Vindos! Sorry to hyjack your post but, haven't run into a Vindo owner before. Regards
