View Full Version : Colour of teak?

I have a large piece of teak from which I am cutting smaller pieces as needed. Though the outside of this wood is a beautiful rich colour, the inside is lighter and more yellow. I think that the colour will darken with time but can anyone please tell me how long this will take and do I have to wait for it to darken before varnishing or will it continue to darken after I varnish it? In other words, will varnishing "fix" the yellow colour as it is? Thanks for any info.

Depends on where the wood is used and how it is coated.

Wood "browns" just like an apple does ... and UV light has a lot to do with it. If the wood is not coated with a UV inhibitor and is left in the sunlight it will brown fairly quickly. The browning continues for the life of the piece of wood.

This is why old cherry furniture is so dark.
