i have just striped a laid deck of its varnish. the cedar deck was varnished with epihanes and i must have put a dozen or so coats on. it looked great but the varnish tended to sporatically break its seal on the joint between the wood making for detailed and fussy maintenance. also the fact that the cedar was soft and crushable underneath the varnish created other hot spots required a great deal of annual work. so today i finally decided to strip the varnish in the laid area (varnish will remain on the surounding teak). i will do some finishing sanding tomorrow and would like to but a sealer on the cedar. i was planing on using deks ole 1. but i am wondering if anyone has any suggestions or words of caution. since the cedar looks great against the teak i think i would like its appearance to be as natural in color as possible. i was also thinking cetol? so what do the pros do?
