T'was a cold and rainy (and blustery!)day.
They say a picture is worth 999 words so:

Looks great Steve. The varnished sheer plank is a nice finishing touch.

A few notes on this Pooduck for your interest:
I swayed from the plans in a few places:
- I left the sheer run a little higher in the bow. When I installed the rub rail prior to trimming the top of the plank it looked good a couple of inches higher than on the plans.
- I used left over ¾” plywood for the seats instead of the specified 4/4 pine or cedar.
- I added floatation compartments fore and aft.
- The stem and center frame are alternating laminations of mahogany and fir.
- I sealed everything inside and out with a coat of epoxy cut about 20% with acetone, applied with a foam roller.
- I installed a sheave in the mast for the main halyard instead of the simple bored hole that was specified.
- I cut off the inner stem flush with the bottom of the breasthook instead of shaping the breasthook around it.
- I lowered the center seats by about 11/2” and let the centerboard cap come on top of the seats for strength.
- I fastened the centerboard trunk and keel with epoxy instead of 5200.
- I screwed and plugged all exposed fasteners.
The project was started April 4th this year. To date I am at about 475 hours, just a few more to go to tweak the rigging and make some cradles for holding the spars during transport. The brightwork consumed a huge amount of time. More time was eaten up scarfing plywood and mahogany because the longer lengths are not available here at a reasonable cost. This time also includes making the motorized rudder (about 40 hours) Total material costs with tax comes in at about $4,000.00 Canadian including the trailer, trolling motor, and sails.
Many thanks to all on the forum who helped me out and provided ideas: mmd, Venicha, HR, Reddog and others. Special thanks to Bob Ketterling, Hans Lassen, Danny G, and BillyBones for sharing their Pooduck pictures and idea’s.
PS: She goes like snot in a good breeze!

reddog: The trials were at my Family cottage on Lake George Kings County. (off the Dalhousie - Aylesford road)

Congratulations. I'm sure it was a great day. Looks prettier than anything (I saw )in the Maritime Museum in Halifax, eh?

Sulk, sulk, sulk....
She looks great!
Sulk, sulk, sulk...
Maybe I will finish mine sometime this decade. I just love to apply epoxy and sand it all down. Must be a method error here. But at least I have glued up my mast and have marked it for sawing. Maybe I'll have it done by October?
I have enjoyed reading your progress reports. There's no point in posting mine as there is not much in the way of progress to report :D
Could you post a picture of what you mean by the mast sheave?
Honestly, if I could only finish sanding and start painting! But every time I think it is good enough, it isn't.

It's good enough. Paint the dang thing and get some pictures posted. Then go sailing. We're talkin' boats here, not art museum pieces. Stand back three meters and tell me I'm wrong.

Steve,
Great job on the boat! Every detail and change that you made looks great! I especially like the motor. Do you have any reports on how does the boat sails?

It's a good thing you didn't start with "...dark and stormy night." ;) The boat is really a beauty.

Just one word...Schweet! The kicked up bow enhanced the sheer nicely.
But isn't that a stem head I see projecting above the breasthook?
Steve McMahon
07-29-2004, 02:27 PM
Willin:
That's the outer stem. The inner stem was shown on the plans to stick through also, but it looked to me to be out of proportion so I cut it flush with the bottom of the breasthook.
Cheers

Willin', I thought the same thing as you until I re-read the post. What Steve did was cut off the inside portion of the stemhead, leaving the outside lamination to stick above the breasthook.

Congratulations Skipper. Awesome finish.
Your boat is one of the finest to appear on the Forum since I've been a member, if you don't mind me saying?

Wanna talk about that motor-rudder some?
Oops. Pooduck Electrification answered most of my questions.
