View Full Version : Braam, just how far north is Hay River?
Geez! (Or should that be G**z!, or maybe _____!) :D it must be cold and dark up there! Just how cold and dark is it, ol' buddy?
Possible answers:
It was so dark Strom Thurman couldn't find his childhood sweetheart...
It was so dark Saddam couldn't find the switch for the ventilation fan...
It was so cold Donn's spellchecker froze...
It was so cold...
Hang in there, eh? Sun's comin' up soon:D

Dam you (as opposed to dam_ you)! Hah First freakin belly laugh in a long time - Strom - :D
JimD, its not that far north, only 1200kms from Edmonton - 100kms north of the 60th parallel. It never gets 100% dark here, not north enough, but the sun is often behind clouds for the three or four hours its 'up' - man when it does shine I feel like running outside - a notion from which I am quickly disabused when I leave the house :D .
Dec. 21 is the shortest day, no?, so things can only get better!
Thanks for the sentiments. I have been spending way too much time here (WBF) lately (that one thread got me kinda riled, and so its become a bit of a 'siren') - I think I am going a little bananas - doesn't help that the wife's away for awhile and the entertainment consists of a theatre (they only change movies once a week, and they only show two at a time) and drinking - a road I am wary of.
I am seriously reconsidering my aversion to TV and may break down and buy one.
How is your boat coming along?
hmm, don't ask me which one, you seem to be a bit of a WildDingo when it comes to falling for plans ;)
Braam, the next boat I actually have a relatively firm plan for completion is the 11 foot catboat dinghy. Have epoxy curing in the garage as I type. But after that, No More Foolin' Around!! Gonna get back to work on the big one. Glad to hear you're ONLY 60 miles north of the Arctic circle instead of waaaay up there :D
Keep up the hard work - you have a heated garage? Man, you never even invited me over to make a mess of the place...
How far along is the Catboat?
Whats the design? (I do remember a discusion on the design/plans forum, I am merely trying to bring some culture to the bilge where I usually reside)
I always wanted to invite you over but I don't allow profanity in my garage :D . The dinghy is the Witholz catboat, plans available through WB. I have the station molds set up and am working out modifications for plywood lapstrake as opposed to cold mold as called for. I ordered a sail kit from Sailritedotcom last week.
I'm signing off now. Some of us still know the difference between night and day smile.gif
Braam, I think it is time that you ordered one of those cool boat model kits from our sponsor. Think of it - boatbuilding, wood, away from the 'pooter for hours at a time, cussin' allowed, and if you spell the name of the boat wrong on the transom - Donn won't know!! :D

Actually started building a kayak, scale model, based on the principles of "Building Skin On-Frame Boats" - tricky finding bending stock that size though ;) And fortunately won't need me trying to write a name on it!

O.K., kids, who can find Braam in this picture?
Bruce, Shag already pulled that one out of goodness knows where. As I told him then I'll tell you now: maybe I am the smuglooking-fat-alcoholic-(alleged)wifebeating-highschool dropout in the middle of the front row. Or maybe not.

Oopp...missed that. Stumbled across this while searching for Hay River...nice piece of the planet. The river looks lively enough. Do you have good access to the big lakes?
Oh, and you can't hide your identity that easily...the website says who you are and it ain't the fat guy.

Bruce, the figures depicted in that picture are mostly fat - I am too, but thats for the wife to complain about....
Do I have access to the big lake? (at first I thought that was a joke, but just in case it ain't) The Great Slave Lake is the second largest bit of fresh water north of Lake Superior on the Planet! (according my Mercator projection map - distortions mistortions), and yes, I can go to beaches, and launch my boat in the river with the lake a minute or two away - unfortunately my catamaran don't have a motor, and the flow, river width/depth, and lack of skill kept me landlocked this fall.
I will build a Diablo if the wife lets me so I can go fishing and have some on the water fun - maybe tow the catamaran out there, sail a little, then tow it up river, I dunno.
Is the Diablo really that easy to build? Or Dynamite a little 'circumspect'? (have built a stitch n glue Kayak, and a Bolger Tortoise...)

No joke...just wondering how close to the lake(s) you're camped.
Diablo is easy to build, in the sense that a Bonobo Chimp could do it, but hard to build in the sense that even a strong, enthusiastic young chimp would soon tire of the sanding and grinding you have to do to fair out the tape seams. It took me nearly as long to build Diablo as it did to build Piccolo (traditional cedar lap. construction).
Having been favourably compared to a chimp in the past (albeit not of the species Bonobo) I take that then as an affirmative endorsement - lovely!
I am quite conscious of the issues involved with taped seam construction - and sanding has always been a job I have "enjoyed  ", but I am willing to give it another shot in light of the fact that I read somewhere that someone placed waxed paper over the seams which kept the fg-tape from curling up (my major problem last time) - I wonder if that would work?

I feel for you guys, BB. ;) I do. On a good year of global warming, I heard you get two weeks of summer. On a bad year you get two new kids. tongue.gif :D

Thankee, thankee!
Haven't had a good laugh all day :D Not since JimD's first post to this thread as a matter of fact.
Actually the folks up north here are quite impacted by global warming - the ice cover is much reduced and so the the hunting areas for Polar bear are shifting and shrinking dramatically. The change in the permafrost too is changing hunting/gathering habits as are the areas where people are able to hunt (and the change in permafrost is going to have longlasting effect on pipelines etc. too, its mostly muskeg up here - just a lot of it is frozen muskeg)
and no kids for me thankyou very much, I am the only kid allowed in the family ;)

We Canadians believe that the winter season gives us a genuinely new appreciation each year for spring and summer :D

Thought it might be a good way to familiarize myself with the design. I roughly planked the hull and googed it with microballons. Next comes a little sanding/fairing and then the fun part of adding the cabin and sails. Now that I can see the hull in 3-D I like the design even more.
