Fuel tank vent fill screen Eggharbor

Did the built in fuel tank vent screens on a 1970 Egg Harbor have a screen metal wire net to prevent flashback from a fire? If not is there a way to retrofit this without resorting to replacing it?
Does anyone know when the regulation for a screen in the vent pipe was enforced? I have my doubts about the fuel tank vent. When the little chrome cover is unscrewed off the vent, I dont see any wire mesh anywhere.

Can't say for sure on an Egg Harbor, but the store boughten ones have screens in 'em, it seems. So, if the screen is missing on yours, just stick one in there and yer done!
